popcorn owner changing to REVO XBMC
#1
Hi,

i have a pch c-200 which i have had enough of waiting for firmware updates and bugs etc. i have done some research and have bought a RV100 to replace the popcorn.

I have no experience of XBMC and i know no linux. Could i have some advice and suggestion as what i should do with this box when it arrives, the best way to run it, install XBMC etc.

you're not alone. i returned and sold almost 10 media players during my quest for flawless dts-hd/truehd playback. all media player companies over promised and under delivered their products to me. i knew then i need to build a mini-itx htpc to replace the flaky media player. i can playback dts-hd/truehd on my standard case htpc flawless for long time, but it's too big for my entertainment center. the mini-itx case fits perfectly in my entertainment center, and i am very happy to go this route. i don't have wait for firmware update from media player manufactures, which they never never fixed my media players.

i'm a windows user, and xbmc pre-eden can playback bd in 1080p with dts-hd/truehd on all three of my htpc's flawless. i cannot comment on linux because i never use it. when your revo arrive, you can give xbmc a try with windows 7. you'll enjoy it!

I have 2 Revo 1600 boxes, they are the ones with the 1.6 single-core atom cpus and I can tell you that for basic video streaming from a local NAS, they will play everything you throw at it, full 1080p bluray rips included.

For yourself, I'd suggest either xbmc live or openelec (openelec would be a bit easier to get setup for a novice with linux).

Edit: reading your post again, doesnt look you have one of the Revo nettop boxes that are usually used, it looks like this is what you have?

it seems that it is built to natively playback all bd files with the included manufacture firmware. i'm not sure how well it work with xbmc though. you can try to playback everything "as is" after you received it. you might like it without xbmc!
