Reading selected item from list onscreen

I'm new to the python programming with xbmcplugin and xbmcgui. I've got a list of items generated onscreen, but I have no idea how to tell the script what to do with it. Right now I'm just selecting them and nothing is happening(obviously) what do I have to do in order to read what is input by the user in this case?
