Image
[CASE] Xigmatek Utgard CPC-T90DB-U01 Micro-ATX ($50 + $15)
[MOBO+iGPU] ASUS M4A88T-M LE AM3 HD4250 Micro-ATX ($82 + $0)
[CPU] SEMPRON 145 SDX145HBGMBOX 2.8GHz Single-Core AM3 45W ($43 + $0)
[PSU] CORSAIR CMPSU-430CX 430W 80Plus certified ATX12V ($45 + $0)
[RAM] Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (1x1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1066Mhz CL7 ($9 + $0)
TOTAL: $244

Motherboard Slots & Ports:
----------------------------

PCI Express 2.0 x16: 1
PCI Express x1: 2
PCI: 1
SATA-II Ports: 6 (note that 1 SATA-II Cable is included in the box)

Case Expansion Bays:
----------------------

External 5.25" Drive Bays: 9

Case Fans:
-----------

Front: 1 x 120mm (the Front Fan/HDD caddy needs to be removed)
Rear: 1 x 120mm
Top: 1 x 170mm

Power Supply Connectors:
----------------------------

SATA: 4
MOLEX: 3

Ok, were ready!! let's roll!!

the first 4 HDD's will require a 4-in-3 Drive Cage ($25)
also needed, 3 SATA-II cables ($2,50) Volume Discounts
also needed to plug the Case Fans, a Molex To 2-Molex Power Connector Cables ($1,50)

the next 4 HDD's will also require a 4-in-3 Drive Cage ($25)
also needed, 4 SATA-II cables ($2,50 ea.) Volume Discounts
also needed, a Molex To 4-SATA Power Connector cables ($8)
also needed, a 2 Port PCI-Express x1 Sata-II Card ($15)

the last 4 HDD's will again require a 4-in-3 Drive Cage ($25)
also needed, 4 SATA-II cables ($2,50) Volume Discounts
also needed, a Molex To 4-SATA Power Connector cables ($8)
also needed, a 2 Port PCI-Express x1 Sata-II Card ($15)
also needed, a 2 Port PCI Sata Card ($15)

So, to sum it up, the different levels look like this:

04 HDD's = ($244) + ($1,50 x 1) + ($25 x 1) + ($2.50 x 3) = $278
08 HDD's = ($244) + ($1,50 x 1) + ($25 x 2) + ($2.50 x 7) + ($8 x 1) + ($15 x 1) = $336
12 HDD's = ($244) + ($1,50 x 1) + ($25 x 3) + ($2.50 x 11) + ($8 x 2) + ($15 x 2) + ($15 x 1) = $409

(So going from the 4 HDD's Level to the 12 HDD's Level requires an extra $131, HDD's not included)

Now, what's left to know?
----------------------------

* USB Fash Drive ($9) to run the unRAID software is not included
* unRAID Registration Keys aren't included (Basic: Free) (Plus: $69) (Pro: $119)
* Hard Disk Drives ($80) aren't included
* MySQL Database/SABnzbd/CouchPotato/Sick Beard users, Upgrade CPU & RAM accordingly
* PoofyHairGuy approved!!

thanks Smile

It looks like a compatible motherboard for a 12 HDD setup done cheaply requires PCI slots for 2 port SATA cards (e.g., 2 PCI Express x1 and 1 PCI Express x16) because these cards can be found for ~$10 ea.

The motherboard above is not available anymore, so would this ASUS M4A88T-M serve as a replacement (for $2 cheaper)? It also includes onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics and has 6 SATA ports. The onboard LAN chipset is Realtek 8111E in this rather than Realtek 8112L.

Realtek 8111E LAN is supported in unRAID v5 Beta

Awesome, thank you for your quick response, eksro! (check your paypal)

What type of RAM and CPU would be best with this mobo to run SABnzbd/CP/SB, transmission, and Crashplan without any hiccups? If automatic dvd-ripping isn't too difficult to setup, I'd love to do that too.

well, 1 stick of 4GB of ram would be more then enough Smile
prices on ram is so cheap these days, might as well go for it.

and why not a cheap Quad Core if money permits.
you seem to want to do alot with your NAS.

What do you think about this http://www.moddiy.com/products/5-in-3-De...osure.html ? That way you can stick in 5 instead of 4 HDD into 3 5.25 slots.

eskro i private messaged you before but i bought a case and its nearly fully housed and was wondering about solutions for fitting more harddrives in or do i buy a new server?

can i move my hard disks and unraid USB to a new bigger case and everything work fine?
Major Props Poofy and Eskro! Check out their sigs for the best help/advice.

you can move everything to a new case... just make sure you label and hook up the hard drives to the same SATA ports (I'm guessing this would be important). As far as the motherboard and operating system go, nothing at all will have changed so it will work the exact same as it did in the old case.

HTPC 2 - HP Stream Mini, 6GB Ram
unRAID 6 Server - Intel Celeron G1610, 20TB Storage

I can only get the ASUS M4A88T-M, AM3, mATX not the LE.

Will it be ok to use?
So I hear I can run xbmc off my old commodore 64.

Pretty cool......pretty really cool

2nd that question.

I know the Realtek 8111E LAN is supported in unRAID v5 Beta

Though I dont have very good info regarding unRAID, have the given a stable release with support for Realtek 8111E LAN yet?

Will this build be working out of the box with CouchPotato, or do I need to upgrade RAM or CPU for that?
I was basically going to use this as my main storage for media content (duuh), and wanted to download from the same box as well.

Ty for help : )

Interesting setup!

Although the "cheapest" part somehow implies the "money can buy" part, IMO ;-)

Eskro, cant get hold of the mobo listed here in UK .Can I use the mobo for the 16hard drive array (ASRock 880GM-LE - which as I see serves the 10 bay as well) as I have 3 4 in 3 hard drive hot swap cages (therefore 12 slots)
Any answers or alternative mobos (UK) would be most appreciated as need to make a shopping list, thankyou

Can't find the case over here in the UK either! Any recommendations for a similar side-loading one that can take 12 drives (with the appropriate 4in3 adapters...)

@stourwalk - trying to find a case wasnt easy for me either. I purchased mine in april (silverstone ps01}
it has 9 front 5.25 bays and is relatively cheap but seems you can only find them on e-bay now
Initially saw a zalman case with 3 x 3 hard drive cages but was advertised on a couple of sites incorrectly {out of stock/discontinued}
try scan computers - have used them for a while now and have had no trouble from them (overnight deliveries as well}
