I'm pinning/sticking this topic-thread here permantly so that you all can share your webtite-links as to where to find royalty-free, public domain (free licenses), or non-copyrighted digital 'clip-art' and images/pictures that skinners, and graphical-artists/designers can use in their skins free of charge (libre/gratis) and without having to worry about any legal issues.

So please, go ahead and add replies with links to websites with free to use artwork, buttons, textures, backgrounds, images, pictures and gif animations, etc.). Again, please respect that all the pictures, icons,... etc. linked to from here should be free to use/modify/distribute either 'as is' with no strings attatched or under a free license.

Here are a few link examples (to some good sites):
- commons.wikimedia.org (Wikimedia Commons), (also refered to a "Wikicommons") is a repository of free content images, sound and other multimedia files. The files uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons repository can be used in all Wikipedia projects (like Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikinews), or downloaded for offsite use, as all of the content is either in the public domain or released under free licenses such as the GNU Free Documentation License.
- openclipart.org (Open Clip Art Library).
- freshmeat.net has themes and resources sections (which contains loads of graphics for x, some are copyright free or licensed under GPL, while some others are not, check it out)

Though on a side note, most non-software companies will probebely give you their permission to use their images/pictures if they used as non-commercial promo for their products. Like for example, I'm sure that car manufacturers, comics publishers, or movie producers/directors, etc. have would be glad if you use their pictures in a skin as long as it just promotes their products in a possitive way.

PS! FOOOD of iconaholic.com (formaly foood.net) have told us that XBMC skinners may use his icons/buttons/thumbnails and wallpaper artwork, etc. from iconaholic.com as long as you credit him plus link to his site (in your skins readme.txt) when using his icons/buttons/thumbnails and wallpaper artwork, etc.

or maybe they do?, see bottom of their main webpage: "no portions of deviantart may be used without expressed, written permission"
though i'm sure if you or anyone who want to use copywrited pictures for a xbmc skin just write to the owner they will allow it(?) Image

Blackbolt Wrote:Ok guys here's the dealio with what happened to me concerning MC360.

Microsoft's European legal team contacted me via email with a 20 page pdf document that detailed every usage of their xbox 360 logo and the word 'xbox' on my website and in the skins screenshots. They asked that I immediatly take the site down till I could make the necessary changes. I acted on that immediatly and took it down. The didn't want their 'x' on anything, which is why I changed it to the 'bolt' logo. I changed all instances of 'xbox' like 'xbox live' and 'xbox 360' to 'xbmc live' and 'xbmc 360'.

Once I had done this, they approved it and allowed me to continue aswell as sending me a very nice letter of approval of what I was doing. I did not have to prove I had made all my textures myself, infact my original 'x globe' was made by myself, but because it was 'in the image' of their original x globe logo for the 360, they wouldn't allow it.

My advice to anyone making this new Xbox experience dash is to make all the textures yourself, make them different enough that they aren't mistaken for being ripped and also don't use any official logos, even if you do create them yourself.

So there you have it, the actual true story of what happened when Microsoft served notice to Team Blackbolt back in March 2006. I'd also like to point out that while I don't share Jezz_X's entire thoughts on the new dash, I don't deem it so great that I'd drop everything I'm doing to re-create it, but good luck to whoever tries it as Team Blackbolt won't be going there. Laugh

Great source for logos: http://www.brandsoftheworld.com
All vector images so perfect image quality.

As far as using it for skinning for example you can get CD DVD, HD logos, etc.

There are even logos of tvshows and tv networks which you can use when making banners or posters for thetvdb.com.

Pexels and Unsplash both have some very decent images that are free to use for non-commercial purposes.
