Eskro - when choosing a SATA II to PCI card for adding more drives, does it have a performance hit to use a PCI card vs. PCIe?

Or do you know of a SATAIIx4 PCIe card for a decent price? Monoprice does not seem to have one and the cheapest I can find at Newegg is $40.

well, for old school PCI slots,
its not really recommended to hook up more then 2 HDD's
even tho you may have more then 1 PCI slot...
because those PCI slot share their bandwidth between them so,
this will greatly influence overall speed if you use more then 2 HDD's.

dont know about 4xSATAII PCIeX1 card, never used them.
with unRAID, users go for 2xSATAII PCIeX1 cards...

Drawde Wrote:Will be building this very soon, probably not the best time to do it with the current state of hard drives but I need it..

One question I did have was I'm unsure how the drives will be powered? Is there something I'm missing that comes with the Norco case? I'm not seeing anything for power cables for the drives unless that's common sense so it was left out. Been reading a lot about the backplane, is there something there that'll split the power for all the drives? I'm assuming i'd still need power cables though..

Bump plz.. I'm ready to order and I'm pretty familiar with what I'm doing I just don't wanna buy anything extra if it comes with it, or not buy it and have to order it after the fact.

eskro, thank you.

so from what i'm looking at here, it looks like this is where the backplane and 1-to-3 molex comes into play. one of those 3 will be for the case fans, and the other 2 will be for the first 2 rows of power on the backplane.. i'd need separate power cables for the last 3 rows of power on the blackplane because, correct me if i'm wrong, but i read somewhere that i only need the first column of each row plugged in for power on the backplane?

so it looks like i need to order at least a couple more 1-3 molex splitters.. and more if i want to use the redundant power ??

Alright so I will just get two 2xSATA cards and be done with it. Thanks.

before these parts arrive one thing i'm confused about is where the breakout cables come in to play? would i be using that for the first 6 drives or for the last 8?

i'm assuming the first 6 hdds (original setup without any expansion cards) would use the 6 sata ports on the board, am i wrong?

as said in first post,
from the start,
you should wire everything in the case....

but to answer your question,
the the breakout cables are for the last 8 HDD's..

finally, yes,
the first 6 hdds (original setup without any expansion cards)
would use the 6 sata ports on the board..

i've got the unraid server up and running thanks to you guys' help. I'm still waiting for the SATA cables to arrive but I couldn't wait, lol.. I only had 2 handy so right now I just have 2+2TB in there. I know I should probably wait until i get the rest of the parts, but when I was going through the setup I noticed that SATA ports 5 and 6 on the mb aren't working. The unraid server wasn't seeing my HDDs so I had to move them to 1 and 2. is this normal? I'm not 100% positive but I believe I was able to see them in the bios, I don't remember.

root@Tower:~# dmesg | grep SATA | grep link
ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
ata4: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
ata3: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

EDIT: NVM figured it out.. changed bios settings from IDE to AHCI.. wouldn't let me delete this

Just curious on this build- is it one you've done or is it theoretical? I'm considering something similar based on a g620 build but I'm nervous about all the required cabling.
