Can't view images via Picture menu

Strange problem: I can't view images using ATV2 and XBMC latest builds. I can successfully connect to the NAS via browsing to Picture sources over upnp, or SMB, and I see the image file listing, which are jpg. But no thumbnails get generated, and when I select the image the screen goes black and no image is ever rendered.

Any ideas? I can provide the log, if that helps.
