What is the significance of the "missed" statistic during video playback? It appears to be different from the number of dropped frames.

When sync playback to display is on, XBMC polls the vertical blank of the display: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_blanking_interval
It uses this to synchronize the video to, but sometimes it misses a vblank (not sure why, maybe because the gpu is busy), when it does it automatically corrects for it, so you shouldn't notice it when it happens.
