[Live] No HDMI audio on XBMC Live... please help!
#1
Sorry everyone, but I am a newbie to the XBMC Live/Ubuntu command line stuff..

I have an HTPC running :
Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3 GHz with 4 GB RAM

My video card is a Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5450 HDPC-ready card.

However, on XBMC Live, I am not getting any audio via HDMI. I've tried a million different things, and nothing seems to work.

When I try:

aplay -L output this is what I get.

default:CARD=Intel
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
Default Audio Device
front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
Front speakers
surround40:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, AD198x Digital
IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=Generic
HD-Audio Generic, ATI HDMI
HDMI Audio Output

I've changed my device settings to the following on XBMC audio menu.

Audio Output: HDMI
Speaker Configuration: 5.1
Boost Volume level downmix - checked
Dolby Digital (AC3) Capable receiver - checked
DTS Capable receiver - checked

Audio Output Device - custom
and write
hdmi:CARD=Generic

Passthrough Output Device - custom
and write
hdmi:CARD=Generic

But I am still not getting any audio. I am however, getting good audio via the HTPC's internal on-board audio.

Is there something I am missing? Would greatly appreciate any help!!

Rasi
p.s. please remember I am a Linux/Ubuntu newbie so I may need command-line instructions if anyone has any ideas...

Can you return your ATI vid card?

You're going to find out quickly that ATI's Linux support is lacklustre. A cheap Nvidia GT 210, 240 or 430 will serve you much better if you're going to stick with Linux.
If I helped out pls give me a +

A bunch of XBMC instances, big-ass screen in the basement + a 20TB FreeBSD, ZFS server.

Thanks for the input... really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I'd like to get the ATI 5450 working before I give up. If there anyone who can shed some light on what I should probably try.

I know there are a few people who have 5450's running Linux and successfully getting HDMI audio?

Ahem. I won't say I told you so...but, you're starting a fight with 1 hand tied behind your back...metaphorically speaking.

Take the $50 ATI and sell it; buy, borrow a $50 Nvidia card and you'll make your issue that much easier to solve.

If you look up and down these boards you'll see that in all cases: ATI + Linux = bad way to spend the weekend.
