:-) no problem, I just appreciate you guys taking the time to help me out. Your work on XBMC is tremendous, and the fact that you guys do it without pay is staggering. (Have you all thought of maybe creating a stand-alone hardware box that runs XBMC and dumping ATV? I'd be first in line to buy.)

Anyway, but back to topic *is* Firecore installed using that method in the Wiki? If it is, for a n00b like me, is there a way to expressly exclude it from the install, or do I have to uninstall after the fact? (and the obvious follow-up, how do I do one or other, or is *that* something on Firecore's website?)

You say it works on one atv2 and not the other? This thread is getting too long as I don't remember this detail being mentioned before.

Are both running the same IOS and xbmc build? What is different between the two installations?

And for cutting the video you could just encode a short section of it using the same settings. Test the clip on your rig and make sure it still has the problem before putting it up.

Hi g-off,

I have 2 ATVs and the short short version:

It works on both when connected to the wireless N network. It works on neither (sporadically) when wired.

I'm putting together a long post now, having tested under several different scenarios, and including CrashReporter, XBMC log, and syslog.... Going to take me some time to test each scenario, hope I'm done in an hour or so.

I expect the end result will be the following (using only one of the ATVs):

On current nightly, wired: Crash on larger files (above 8-9 gig)
On current nightly, wireless: No crash on larger files, but buffering
Re-jailbreak, on current Cydia version, Wired - No Crash
Re-jailbreak, current nightly, wired - Crash on larger files.

I just want to test it all, all at once, and provde as much crash data as I can under all of the same conditions. My theory, as a complete non-programmer, is that something may have been changed with regard to buffering (the ATV can't handle the influx of data on the wired connection) that is causing it to crash/run out of memory. With the wireless, the data connection is slower so it isn't rushing to keep up. It has to be something that was changed in a nightly since the latest official.

But once again, I'm testing each scenario and will provide my findings as soon as I'm done.

If you have any suggestions for me as I'm workin thru, please drop me a line, as I have the message board up to record step by step.

Hi everyone:

Okay... my latest round of testing.

Tonight, I upgraded to the latest nightly - xbmc-20111204-3943772-master-atv2.deb.

Just to repeat what I've said in previou posts:

I'm running my a media server with WHS 2011 to 2 AppleTVs - one wired, one wireless, using a gigabit router. (Linksys E3000) My second wireless radio is set to the higher frequency and is dedicated to the stream.

I have both a centralized MySQL database as well as a centralized artwork folder on my WHS2011 server. Both ATVs connect to my files via SAMBA shares.

Test 1 - no new jailbreak, wired ATV:

I tested 6 files, letting them all play approx. 5 minutes (where I didn't crash first). (played them in reverse order below, to correspond with syslog for the testing - if that even matters.)

1. Battlestar Galactica S1, Ep 4 - No Crash. 1.94 GB

MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/np4meKs8

2. 300 (movie) - No Crash - 4.52 GB

MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/U6aYLdgn

3. The Terminator (movie) - Crash after approx 1 min - 9.31 GB
MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/Bqx3je97
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/TdhkfguH
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/j3z1hA5E

4. Tombstone (movie) - crash after approx. 20 seconds - 14.3 GB
MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/5Us74N7E
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/NkTw2asv
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/fHz70UjW

5. Lord of the Rings - Two Towers (Extended) (Movie) - Crash after approx. 15 seconds - Part 1 File 12.9 gb
MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/v6rPC9Ph
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/dmdvtpdi
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/MTLPDKNc

6. Cinderella Man (movie) - Crash after approx 2 mins - 13.9 GB
MediaInfo - http://pastebin.com/0FkuM7E1
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/PdVk1hdj
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/tuJjTrDz

Note that the CrashReporter logs above were all named "LowMemory"

XBMC Log - for #1 and # 2 above (no crash) - http://pastebin.com/c2UVdgBH

Syslog - covers all 6 - http://pastebin.com/ckMYJZFE

Phew. What a pain. Okay. Next post will be the same, with the crashed files tested on the same ATV but over a wireless connection.

Test 2 - Wireless Connection, Same ATV

1. The Terminator -- No Crash

2. Tombstone -- (new development!) Buffers at approximately same point as Crash from test 1 -- crashed during buffer
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/0EvuKeRg
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/pty1cnW7

3. Lord of the Rings - Two Towers - Same as above -- Buffer at approximate same crash point from test 1 (within a few seconds) - crashes during buffer
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/gVtxC1um
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/index/d9CmZEWK

4. Cinderall Man - Again, sameas above -- crashing within a few seconds.
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/qZdayDZx
CrashReporter - http://pastebin.com/ndXqDALE

Syslog to cover all -- http://pastebin.com/eDxtwM1i

Well damnit if this doesn't torpedo my theory regarding wireless vs wired... Sorry guys, shows how little I know -- aside from the aberation that is The Terminator file.

Okay, now I'm going to take the AppleTV, freshly jailbreak it, and install only the official XBMC on it and try these 4 files... Before when I tried this, it worked without crashing.... Now watch me be wrong about that too.

FML.

Thanks again to all for your patience. I will also try to get a clip of the Lord of the Rings file -- I still have that disc.

Test 3: Wired, Cydia version.

Okay.... So, I re-jailbroke and installed the Cydia version and updatebegone (no NitoTV). Have not yet updated to the latest nightly.

Using a wired connection, all previous crashing issues did not reproduce themselves.

I played all 4 of the videos above that were crashing and had no issues at all.

I know this version of XBMC is no longer supported, but I've included the logs here just in case anything there can help with this...

The video playback was smooth and without issue. I haven't yet connected to the centralized SQL database as I'm not sure how well this version will play with the current version of the database.

So.... there you have it. Like I've said many times, I'm not a programmer, and I barely know what I'm talking about half the time, but based on the fact that the Cydia version plays fine and the current nightly crashes with memory issues suggests to me that something, somewhere, in the software is being funky.

I'm willing to work with you guys however I have to, including trying one nightly at a time from the Cydia version until I start having issues (if an archive of those nightlies exists.)

I love this software, love this platform, and I'm willing to give whatever testing assistance I can to help you guys out.

I just wish I wasn't the only one having these issues. (Well -- you know what I mean. I don't wish these problems on anyone else, I just wish there was some common thread here to help work out the issue.)

Anyway -- thanks again for all of your patience with my BS. Please let me know what next steps I can/should take.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Steve

No problem, happy to do what I can. Since I'm getting playback presently on Cydia I may hold off on installing any nightlies (although I'm missing sql). Should I just continue to monitor the commits to see if anything changes? (although I have absolutely no idea what I should look for.)

Or will there be a ticket at some point on the road map (assuming you guys find an issue) that I can keep watching on the development page? (I know you guys have a ton of stuff to fix and this will likely take a lot of time but I'd like to avoid running any kind of upgrade to a nightly (or even Eden) until I know I can avoid crashes.)

Let me know if you guys want any of my files to use as test subjects or whatever. Or if there's anything else I can try out, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks again!!!

Hi guys -- I was just reading some other threads and saw someone mention that "about the max" that ATV can handle is a bitrate of 8000 kb/s for BluRay. Is this true? I've been ripping my MKVs at 9-12000 kb/s and just want to make sure that I'm not causing my own problems here. (I seem to remember previous discussions with people who use much higher bitrates, but maybe I'm dreaming?) Obviously this doesn't explain why Cydia plays it and the nightly doesn't, but just wanted to make sure I'm not missing the forest for the trees here.

Right, I know it doesn't play the 1080, but it will play a 1080 file and just display it in 720.

I'm also experiencing problems with 1080p playback since a few weeks. It worked before. Could be related to the fact that I changed my Synology NAS from DHCP to Static IP, or to a recent nightly build. I'll post my logs tomorrow.

I get the impression that my issue might be somewhat unique (related to Out of Memory issues), at least reading back through my discussions with the mods. I hope that it is, and I hope that it isn't (so that I'm not just dealing with some freaky situation on my setup only and that it *is* something that can be repaired.

I can say for sure that changing your Synology to static IP from DHCP would not cause buffering.
