XBMC Nightlies Crashing on 1080p Playback
#61
So, it still crashes. Here is some background info. I'm running XBMC (Pre 11.0 Git:20111206) on ATV2 (iOS 4.3 2557). XBMC is the only plugin I've installed, so no NitoTV or whatsoever. Furthermore, I'm using the Aeon NOX skin, disabled the TV Next Aired script (caused some crashes in the past), installed updatebegone, and running as less widgets, options, plugins, etc. as possible. I'm using a Synology NAS (SMB protocol) as the source for my files.

It all worked fine in the past. I'm updating XBMC to the latest nightly every now and then (ssh, wget/dpkg) and recently changed my NAS from DHCP to Static IP. Since last week, I'm not able to play 1080p MKV files smoothly. I can play AVI and 720p without any problem, but most 1080p files crash.

I posted a debug log. In this log I'm able to play two 1080p MKV files, but XBMC crashes the third time. Then I go back to the main Apple TV screen. Somehow there is no Crashlog, so the debug log is the only log I have.

I hope you guys can help me and check the log to see what causes these crashes. If you need more info, let me know.

Thanks!

Get us the syslog and be sure that you don't have the firecore mediaplayer no exposed vnc server installed...

Hi Memphiz, devs:

Was just curious if the logs I'd posted a week or so ago revealed any "ah ha!" issues that were causing my Out of Memory crash, or if I'm just one of those lucky people that has the "weird issue."

At this point, wasn't sure if there was anything that could actually be changed/edited in the software (whether now or after Eden), or if I should start re-encoding all of those videos ::banging head into desk::

Thanks again for all of your hard work!

ah has are very seldom :/ ... davilla fixed a memory leak some days ago which was when playing back h.264 content ... did you test the latest nightly? ( dec 10th is the latest i think)

I installed the 12/10 nightly on my wireless ATV and crashed to frontrow on buffering, similar to the crash I was getting before.

I'll upgrade the wired ATV tonight and see what happens. I'm just nervous to lose the Cydia version that currently works -- maybe I'll just download that deb file and keep it safe somewhere. :-)

Will throw up some logs later if it crashes again and try to cut a small clip from one of my Blu Ray files as well to see how it handles that.

Thanks!

Could you cut a short sample (not more then 100mb) from this and upload it somewhere for us? (e.x. dropbox or similar). Of course only if the cut snippet still crashs on your side ...

Would it be okay if I did Two Towers instead? I still have this disc and can just cut the first chapter out using Fab. I wasn't able to find a program that would dice up my MKVs.

It doesn't matter what you cut ... it matters if the small version can reproduce the crash Wink. I just quoted this one because you stated it crashs after a couple of secs already.

So feel free to take what you want - as long as it crashs Smile

Excellent -- they all crash within the first minute or 2, but I'll test the clip to ensure there's a crash before I upload/post.

Memphiz:

Installed the latest nightly, and of course I crashed. :-)

But the good news (hah) is, I ripped only the first 4 minutes (chapter) 1 of The Two Towers at 12000 kb/s, 1080p, h264 audio, and it DID crash! So it's not related to file size! I'm guessing it may be that the bitrate is too much. (I recently started ripping new files at 10000 kb/s in the hope that I'd get better performance, but nope.)

The bad news is that the file is about 509mb, sorry I couldn't get it smaller unless I changed my encode settings, which would defeat the purpose of this test. It crashed for me just as "The Lord of the Rings" logo was fading to black, just before the fade-in on the mountains. I generally will crash in the same spot, or nearly the same spot, every time I play a file.

I will be *extremely* disappointed if this doesn't crash for you guys! :-)

Let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Many thanks again for your patience and assistance,

Steve

Plays on iphone4, dies on atv2 with out of memory. I fear that we need just a little more memory to be able to play this level/profile h264.

mhh i thought "we can do avatar - so we can do everything else too" ... well if not - we will live in a world of crashes ... or we can predict memory usage and call the wontplay function Wink

I'm guessing that the XBMC software has gotten a little more memory-intensive since the Cydia version, since these files do play on that old version?

So, is the *fix* either waiting for ATV 3 or downgrading my files? (this one's at 12, but it's also crashing on 10k and even a 9K bitrate.)

It's not a bit-rate issue. It's a memory usage issue.
