Improving the picture viewing features in XBMC/Kodi. [Helix update]

Robotica Wrote:But first, it would be great if some team-xbmc members and solexalex would give their opinion. What are the plans within team-xbmc related to pictures or is the team awaiting patches for those features? Does the proposed "porting-the-picture-addon-to-the-core"-approach sounds worth the effort?

spiff Wrote:doubt it - nobody has worked on it.

What do you mean? That mentioned bugs aren't going to be fixed? Most importantly, do you think it's the right approach to port the addon to the core? As I have read in the wiki (see OP), is it an option to integrate the Addon Database as a whole into the core so future headless config could be easier?

For now, out of scope for this topic. However, there are sub-optimal solutions on the forum.

Lanczos3 is already there, right? Maybe only used as shaders for video? Can this also be used for pictures?

as far as im concerned it already is implemented into comic viewers such as comical and that viewer has a couple years on its back

so it should be possible and would be much appreciated

and this would really be appreciated by a ton of people the image filter and the suppport both...no joking

sub-optimal solutions?...at the very best id say lolz xD

yeah use an autoit script to load comical etc...not even close to anything with the word optimal for me ,anything concerning having to use an external program is poison to me xD

Well, I know there are several quite more important / vital issues floting around besides this.
But I would also like to emphasis these still unresolved things:

1. In PictureViewer there are only two Exif fields exposes to Skin to use: Reso, Time
2. In pictureInformation still the Exif User Comment field has the UTF8 problem: only one char is shown.

The ideal Thing for at least me is to have pictures Exif UserComment field shown on top the picture (bottom center alling)

There is a patch for this: https://github.com/fetzerch/xbmc/commit/...401c3e0e34

Since the opening of this topic the picture section has been greatly improved. Still some unsolved/unconfirmed bugs (some even with patches/solutions):

- Support automatic scrolling of panoramas in slideshows Unattended patch related to Images displayed by slide-show do not fill width or height of screen (Fixed: This one);
- Problem with next and zoom fixed: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/1373 &
- No picture streaming over UPNP (maybe part of GSOC?): http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=132713
- Not possible to properly control (= start, stop and pause/resume) slideshow with keyboard/MCE Remote: See Ticket #1 or Ticket #2. (rotate however, should work)
- memleak in slideshow: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=106686&page=2
- Scaling different between show single picture and slideshow (Bug report and another one(including test set))
- GUI problems and inconsistency. Context menu needs some cleanup: This one andthis. Also sorting on date doesn't work. A simple GUI option (in the context of the slideshow) to control the amount of time each picture shows in a slideshow would be much appreciated.
- Slideshow and Videos = This has become a problem since video's are also listed/shown in in the picture section (see patch). The slideshow feature opens a fullscreen video window (internal video player - DVDplayer instead of the slideshow) and then uses its controls. This means the playlist causes problems since another player as expected is used. This needs a rather large redesign to change. See Ticket #1 and Ticket #2 and Ticket #3.
- SMB and password troubles: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11858
- Not possible to control the amount of time for each picture to show. See: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1138418)
- In pictureInformation still the Exif User Comment field has the UTF8 problem: only one char is shown. (see http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=117625): fixed
- pre load images in slide show: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11791

Some other bugs, that needs some conformation:
- Maybe add some options to match picture resolution to display resolution (now a picture of 3872x2592 isn't stretched to full screen (1366x768)
- not working EXIF tags: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/13154
- playlist for picture usage in python: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/12292

And once the imagefactory is in maybe it is time to support more RAW image formats. LibRAW is an interesting option to support this.

After fixing rotating (See: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/commit/c847...d6aa25c872) still some troubles controlling the slideshow with a keyboard (and MCE remote):
Start, Stop and pause don't work since they are not mapped in keyboard.xml (see available mappings: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/c847bf...d.xml#L315)
(see other bugreports: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=95657 and http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1138418))

Relatively new user to XBMC ... its great for movies and TV shows ... but lacking in picture and home movies browsing department.

Unlike movies and TV shows ... I have picures and home videos in thousands (if not in ten thousands) ... so far could not find any product out there that meets all my needs:
1. able to categorize the pictures (tag people, tag places, tag events, create custom tags)
2. able to share database ... i.e. multi user environment
3. has a decent front end viewer that i can put on set-top box and view picture on my TV by categories

XBMC is able to do above extremely welll for movies and TV shows ... i think partly because movies and TV shows are easily categorized and you can scrape that info from websites.

Not so for picures and home videos ... you cannot scrape info for them from websites ... the process for categorizing pictures is long/tedious process and requires good inerface to do so efficiently (i found ACDSee interface to work fine for me) . However, categorizing interface is not the best one for viewing (i dont want to put ACDSee interface as a front end for showing off my pictures to my friends/family ... its ugly, not easy to use for layman, and they can accedently delete or change categories ... plus acdsee is not a multi user environment)

What would be good is to have a central database for pictures ... interface for categorizing them (i think separate from XBMC as a back-end/administrator tool but multiuser capable ... like this whole family can help organizing photoes and home videos from their PC ... not XBMC boxes) ... and XNMC viewing support for categories created

So ideal workflow would be:

1. me and my family spending hours categorizing our pictures and home videos from our PCs and laptops

2. XBMC boxes show off our effort to our guest and friends on large TVs ... i.e. over simple to use XBMC interface - i can filter myself and my mates during my wedding (i am sure they are not interested to look at my relatives)

This topic (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=133905) gives an addon, which matches your needs closest from within XBMC.

I get the idea. Photographers (and I) do that with Lightroom or Aperture. Would make no sense to put such complex functionality inside xbmc. Specially because the result of all that categorizing tagging etc. may easily be stored in EXIF and all those other types of tags. Not much different from mp3 files. But, as you say and know, it's a matter of taking the time to do all that manually because no scraper may get info from the web for your pics and preferences. Once done and stored the metadata back inside each file, xbmc should be used to scrape the files' tags and store them in a db, along with easier things to change and store from inside xbmc like e.g. star ratings (also scrape-able from tags) or rotation.
