Apple TV 2 keeps crashing
#1
Just installed XBMC on Apple TV 2. The release from yesterday (26/10/11).

However it just randomly crashes.

I play a movie for a bit and then the screen goes black and it resets the device.

Any help appreciated.

I'm on iOS 4.3

Switched off the thumbnail settings mentioned in another post just in case this is causing the problem and it still crashes.

Thanks that seems to have solved that problem.

I've come across another since. When playing video the ATV stops to buffer every so often.

I'm linking to an Unraid server via smb over wireless N.

I link to the server from other devices without any problems. Is this an Apple TV problem or an XBMC issue (or both)

The XBMC needs to buffer data before playing on. That is why it says it is buffering.

You need to provide a logfile and a mediainfo for the file you are trying to play. Otherwise we need a crystal ball.

Not convinced by this.

Readin up it seems that Apple TV 2 and Smc do not make good bed partners.

Out of curiosity I installed Twonky on my server to try out streaming via upnp.

Guess what it works like a charm over wifi. No buffering whatsoever.

Need to get a way for Samba to work as Twonky is only a trial version at the moment.

Does anyone know a way to get samba to work?

Thank god that i'm not here to convince somebody. (i know i'm not a good singer though Wink )

Its just not that easy like saying it works with upnp why doesn't it work with smb then? Of course most people discovering buffering problems think like this and don't believe it when i just say "its the crappy WLAN". But i just stopped to explain myself over and over again - thats why i only say that arrogant sounding sentence. But i realize that most users are not comfortable with that so may be i will change my reactions on that problems a bit.

So my tips sorted by "most likly to solve the buffering":

1. go wired
2. use nfs
3. Double, triple and quadruple check that the playing media is doable for the atv2 (everything > SD resolution should be "in spec" h.264 encoded material, no interlaced stuff, no 60fps stuff).

You should be able to play h264 720p content cleanly over n-wireless and smb.

upnp is great for fast streaming but sucks ass for everything else as far as functionality in xbmc is concerned.

Appreciate your help. Don't think I don't.

It's just strange that if I do a test right now and stream the same video over upnp via Twonky from my unraid server I get no buffering error.

If I stream the exact same video via smb from my unraid server I get the buffering issue.

I don't know what the difference is.

Will try nfs.

Thanks again.

Post a log and and a mediainfo and we might be able to help.
You might be playing something that uses software decompression that is bordeline when using upnp. SMB is a more taxing protocol.

Cool. Will do later. Kids are currently watching a movie on it know that it seems to be working via Twonky Media.

I did a lot of testing about video buffering and stuttering, using both Twonky Server and SMB on my ReadyNAS connected via Powerline and other tests using a Buffalo NAS (Twonky and SMB and FTP) connected directly via a 100Mpbs LAN switch.

I only got very smooth video with MPEG4 AVC (H.264) coded videos. They run well in all situations (Powerline, wifi N, Twonky, SMP, FTP, etc). No buffering, fast search, all goes right. Both 1080p and 720p tested.

Be careful, I mean 1080p MPEG4 AVC (13Mbps video with [email protected] profile, stereo AAC audio), not 1080p M2TS files (AVC 15Mbps [email protected] profile video and AC3 multichannel audio). I got the same buffering problems with them.

No other kind of video runs well, 720p or SD, in any configuration. That's because only H.264 is hardware decoded in ATV2, I suppose, and the multichannel overhead of AC3 audio is probably too heavy for it.
