[LINUX] Dual monitor - one for Video, one for Now Playing?

Question
So yeah, I installed xbmc on Ubuntu 11.10 and I love it.

My setup: Toshiba laptop with VGA-out to a TV, extended desktop. No nVidia drivers running; all the graphics are onboard Intel. Ubuntu running in 2D mode. I mostly control xbmc with the official remote software on my android phone.

I've figured out that the best way of using xbmc on this machine is to run xbmc windowed and hide the title bar of the app, so it looks full screen on the TV and I can use the mouse to control other apps on the laptop screen while xbmc is playing video or whatever.

Now what I'd love to do is have a "Now Playing" type screen on the laptop display, with a seek bar and time elapsed/remaining, and some playback controls. Maybe leave some space on the screen for a digital clock and some weather info or something.

Does anyone have any experience of getting this working? I'm thinking the best way to do it would be to run a seperate Linux app as a (local) remote control, but I haven't been able to find anything suitable for this on the web.

Ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
