Looking for HTPC build advice
#1
Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice for my htpc build.

I have some old hardware, and i was wondering if it could do 1080P playback with XBMC.

mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813123236
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819103537
RAM: 1.5 gigs of ddr ram.
HD: i wanted to use 16 gig usb stick and an external usb harddisk
VGA: Haven't got one yet, need some advice on that
CASE: Haven't got one yet.
TV: hdmi full hd plasma 42 inch panasonic

Right now i'm using a PS3 to stream my movies. I have a lot of 720P and 1080P content.

I would like to know if i can build a htpc with this hardware which can play my movies whitout problems.

thx

Yes, But what OS - 16 Gb USB as a Drive? XBMC Live?

just get a 5450, 420, GPU should do 1080p fine

I was thinking of XMBC live or an linux version.

The machine is a dedicated HTPC.

The CPU is't the fastest anymore, but when i get an ATI 5450. It will do all the encoding?

All Except DTS-HD Bitstreaming. Which XBMC would even use. It will do DTS and Dolby Digital though. At least most do. If you want HD sound you have to go with 5650 or 430 If your not using a receiver it doesn't even matter

At least that was my experience - Someone correct me if im wrong

I've got no reciver.

I want to plug it in my tv directly with a hdmi cable.
My ps3 is plugged in the same way.

Then any 5450 < / 420 < will do.

You might even do what I did for a case. I took an old Dell 2400 and pained it black. Actually looks good

You will want to go with an Nvidia GPU if you are going to use Linux versions Nod This is covered and discussed quite a bit in numerous threads if you want to read up on it.

actually, the hd5450 will do dts-hd, truehd and 3d. here is the full spec on it- ATI Radeon™ HD 5450 Graphics .

if you're planning to use linux, the gt430 will do- ECS NGT430C-1GQR-F GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit .

if you want to bitstream hd audio, there is nothing easier than w7!

I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

not really, and it's depend- Will my 3D TV work with HDMI 1.3?, Benchmark Results: 3DMark Vantage And Far Cry 2, 3D Performance, Howto enable 3d with ATI HD 5450?, etc.

this guy watched shreck 3d with his hd5450- ATI 5450 can do 3D now

im not talking about that,,,

im talking about true 3D signal aka you need HDMI 1.4

well, there is no gpu can do 3d by itself. regardless of gpu, you'll need 3d media player to playback 3d.

Glasses are a key part of how 3D TV works. A 3D TV alternates between "left eye" and "right eye" versions of an image very, very quickly. Whether your 3D TV is active or passive, the glasses ensure that the correct eye sees the correct image at all times. If you try watching a 3D program without 3D glasses, the image will look blurry.

TV makers are working on "glasses-free" 3D TVs, but the general consensus is that they're several years away from being ready for the market.

if you read my post carefully, i mentioned "it's depend". as you can see amd spec it as "3D stereoscopic display/glasses support16". it is still amazing that a $25 card has 3d, dts-hd and truehd options- Sapphire 100291DDR3L Radeon HD 5450 Graphics Card.

it is why, i said "it's depend". it's not entirely "wrong" to say that it can do 3d, isn't it?
