Same problem for me.
XBMC is buffering most videos, usually after a couple of minutes of playing. ATV2 is wired to the file server (WHS) Today I got sick of it. To try a fresh start, I reinstalled XBMC completely (apt-get remove org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2 --purge + removed the xbmc folder from Libary/Preferences). Installed the base version and then the latest nightly (11/20/2011). Still buffering. Tried switching video source from SMB to FTP. Didn't help. Tried setting the audio to Coax/Optical. Didn't help. Here is the XBMC log. Here is the mediainfo for the video file. Seems like the buffering is related to something audio, but I'm not entirely sure what it means. Would appreciate any advice on this. |

Do you downmix to stereo or do you use a av receiver with passthrough?

mediainfo: http://pastebin.com/9T0FvEdC I've tried changing audio output. I'm using samba but haven't tried ftp (since I'm not sure how to set it up on my server :o)

I have installed a number of ATV2+XBMC to friends. and for some users, streaming buffer. Since its live stream i thought internet issue. But then after i playback a live stream for 2 minute i unplug the ethernet wire. and the stream kept going for about 40-60sec with buffering. which means its nothing to do with the network, as it has downloaded ahead of the streaming and kept it in cache. However ATV2 with xbmc has an issue, i have not tried the optical setup, however will give it a go tonight.
I use latest built from 26th november. |

I agree. I have posted logs, but have yet to find a sollution.
My network has been like this for a long time, and to compare, my WDTV Live did not buffer one single time on 2-3 years. After changed alot of settings like Vertical Blank Sync, Audio sync etc, it is better. However, during a 1.5 hour playback, it buffers roughly 10-15 times.

Make sure you are not streaming non h264 video at greater than sd resolution. Or - you can only stream h264 at 720p+

Or - you can only stream h264 at 720p+ The answer seems obvious that ATV2 will never be able to pass HD content that is not h264 without some issues. I don't have a problem with that except that my ATV1 with a CrystalHD running on the other TV does not like h264 and has no buffering issues with any 720p HD content. Do we wait for the ATV3 with the A5 processor and resign ourselves to Steve's hobby? Personally, I monitor this board on a more or less daily basis but have not bothered with any of the nightlies in some time. |

ATV1 != ATV2
The broadcom card is a commercial product that is well documented. We are pretty lucky that it can do h264 at all. It is only through the hard work of the devs (Davilla et al) that they managed to reverse engineer the hardware decoding API as far as they have. Potentially the hardware has all the goodies to do other formats but Apple in their typically Apple way have gone all out to keep it a secret from evil people who try to sully the perfection of their products.
