A quiet upgrade of a device just before christmas seems like a stupid move, because you're missing out on so much potential business... I think it's just Amazon and BB trying to sell out their old stock before christmas to make place for new products - not necessarily a new ATV. |

I certainly hope that this rumour is true. It'd be nice to have 1080p in XBMC and possibly a faster UI, with skins enabled

Quote:The existing model has been around since September 1, 2010, and a new device might very well replace the single-core A4 with a dual-core A5. That bump would help 1080p playback and smooth out the UI on the Apple TV. The CPU doesn't do any of the video decoding at those resolutions, it's all handed off to another chip. It WOULD make the interface faster. ![]() Code: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON `xbmc_%`.* TO 'xbmc'@'%'; |

It would help with any video formats that aren't hardware accelerated (Xvid/Divx), no?

ATV1 is shipped using a cut down version of 10.4. He's installing linux on it so the point of OS is moot.
And Airplay is integrated into XBMC now, another moot point. ![]() Code: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON `xbmc_%`.* TO 'xbmc'@'%'; |

Pure speculation on my part, but I don't think we'll see a new (or at least, A5 powered) ATV. The fact that the A5 didn't make its way into the iPod touch line seems to suggest that it's either too expensive for Apple to use it in all their devices, or there is some kind of shortage (or they have too many A4s).
