[Micro-ATX] A8-3850 (4x2.9Ghz) + HD6550D
Now that I'm up and running, I'm extremely happy with this machine. I don't care about the 3.0 USB on the front panel anymore Smile

just signed up to say thanks for the excellent guides. I opted for this build but with an antec 2480 case and I'm very happy with it.

Stock cooler is a bit loud but will be replacing that with Scythe Katana 4 next payday ... same time as I get my SSD ;-)

Thanks again for all your work, really didn't know where to start when I first decided to do a htpc build and it's helped me out no end. And to think I was so close to buying a zotan!

Can anyone say if it's possible or makes sense to use an old pc case and power supply for building an htpc? I have an old HP Pavilion AMD Athlon a1710n and wanted to see about at least re-using the case, cd/dvd drive, and psu? Anyone have opinions on this? My plan is to basically put in the exact cpu and motherboard from this thread. Let me know what anyone thinks?

Is anyone in here successfully outputting anything besides LPCM over HDMI on Windows 8 with the A8-3850?

I've tried both the win8 preview drivers and win7 drivers, but I can't output Dolby/DTS. Receiver definitely supports it - Onkyo NR717

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

New egg is currently having a sale on the AMD A8-3870K. Is it worth upgrading to this?

Upgrade from what? What are you trying to achieve with it?

>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

Sorry, should have been more specific. An upgrade from the processor listed in this build: A8-3850.
I am looking to play the hd video files will be stored on a central server and running through CAT6, run Netflix (at 1080P), play Blu-Rays, web-surf, and mild gaming (my wife wants to be able to play Sims 3).

Or are these overkill for my needs?

You can buy the cheaper A8. For HTPC, it'll be no difference between the 3850 and 3870.......or AMD A6-3500 w/ low power consumption/less heat is fine for your HTPC needs too.....

Would this PSU work well in this build? Fit and vent properly with the Case and enough room for optical drive?

If the PSU fan is facing down, it'll match the case vent. Here is a perfect PSU for the ML03B case- SILVERSTONE ST40F-ES..........

I'm trying to save a few bucks so hopefully one of those I posted will work in the case.

looks like the ASRock MB-A75M is extinct, at least in Canada..

Is this particular build requiring an update?
