Video playback crashes
#1
Hi all,

my XMBC on ATV2 freezes and crashes when playing 1080i and 576p videos, respectively:

Platform: AppleTV2
Version of iOS/ATV: 4.4.3
XBMC Build version and date compiled: XBMC PRE-11.0 Git:20111121-db7a8b7
Install Method: ssh'd and copied (dpkg)

Freeze when playing 1080i AVCHD videos

Description:
1) Click on a 1080i AVCHD video file for playback
2) Immediate freeze of XMBC (first frame of video is shown in green color).

FULL Debug Log: http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=qr6czVgh

Crash when playing MP4 576p videos

Description:
1) Press and hold Menu button on folder to add all files to playback list
2) Start playback
3) After ca. 20min successful playback of multiple video files, XMBC crashes (black screen)

FULL Debug Log: http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=keHPRFPx

On the 1080i AVCHD file, it doesn't look like the atv2 supports interlacing.

On the second file, just guessing but have you tried any changes from the FAQ, here's a couple worth testing:
- Configure the audio settings in XBMC to use optical/coax, even if you are using HDMI. If this fixes your buffering issue, please let us know on the forums.
- Audio output could also be the culprit, go to Apple TV > Settings > Audio & Video > Audio Output and set it to "16 bit".

Unrelated question: what IR remote are you using ? there are lots of "AppleTV[865]: [ERROR] XBMCPureController: Unknown button press remoteAction" in syslog.

I'm just using the Apple tv 2 Remote (the Silver One) and the Remote Apps by Apple for iPad and iPhone.

your crashlogs are from the nov 21th ... but your syslog starts at the nov 23th ... that doesn't help for the first shot ...

here is the syslog for Nov 21 and 22
http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=fxGewS8c

My xbmc was crashing again yesterday and the day before (Always when playing movies or even photo slideshow for 20min), but there is no crashlog. It seems in case of my problem xbmc crashes, but the AppleTV does not. Which log files are relevant instead?

Thanks in advance for your support. What you have done with xbmc is great. I'd love to have it running stable....

Some of your crashes are due to low memory (update to the latest nightly - we have fixed a memory leak there which could cause this).

For the other crash a hint to the devs (davilla):

Code:
722.Nov 21 22:17:24 AppleTV AppleTV[234]: -[__NSCFString _getValue:forType:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x40ecb0
723.Nov 21 22:17:24 AppleTV AppleTV[234]: exception: -[__NSCFString _getValue:forType:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x40ecb0

Are we doing this?!?

mhh on another note ... do you try to airplay stuff to your atv2 while XBMC is running without using the xbmc internal airplayserver but the one which comes with the appletv2?!? ... just saw some strange errors in the log ...

It didn't know that xbmc has airplay support. Will check and enable that.

One question: Would the crashes due to low memory crash only xbmc or the whole AppleTV OS?

And which crashes appear in the crash files? Only AppleTV crashes or also xbmc crashes?

Because it seems that my main problem (the MP4 video playback crashes after 20min) doesn't produce crash files. After the video playback cash, I get a black screen. Then I usually ssh into the AppleTV and type in "killall AppleTV". Then I am back in the Apple TV GUI and can click on xbmc to go back to xbmc...

Yesterday, I updated to the newest nightly (Nov 24) and I tried different video files produced with handbrake, but the problem still exists...

I also tried the suggested audio settings, but that also doesn't help.

I noticed that the xbmc.log contains the warning "WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(video)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available" just before xbmc crashes. May this is related?
