No you got me wrong ... AFP is holy crap and unloved by intension (at least by me). I just wanted to point out that FTP isn't really under active development.

I have Eden Beta installed. Trying to set up xbmc to play files on my externalHD attached to my Airport Extreme. I have the current jailbreak and all updates, except a nightly build for xbmc if there is one.
When using zeroconfig, XBMC recognizes my Imac and external drive as AFP & Samba, but won't let me choose the server/hard drive as an AFP. I can set up using SMB, but when done, I go to files to open it and nothing. Any solution.

paskj, were you able to figure out what you needed to do? I have the same issue, when I click zeroconfig, the folder is just blank. I had all this working and decided to do some updates and now I am lost Smile

Using Eden Beta three now. When I got it working it was under Beta 2. I set it up with SMB. Have not revisited the others. My prob was , I did not realize my HD was in sleep mode while trying to hook up. All is well.

Are you using the latest Utility software (6.0) I just updated and that´s when I lost my connection.

My drive is running but still runs blank.

I am having a similar issue. I am running the Eden Beta 3 on a ATV1 and ATV2 both have the same thing happen. The external drive is connected to a Mac running 10.7.3 server. Created a sharepoint and even set it up for both SMB and AFP. If I try to connect to it with SMB I can see the folder and files but they don't play. Using Zeroconf the external drive doesn't even show. I Tried to add a network location so I could designate a username and password but that didn't make any difference(Tried AFP and SMB).

As mentioned in the faq. Afp sharing only works with hfs formatted hdds (not fat32 and not ntfs). And smb on lion is incompatible to xbmc (apple messed it up due to licensing issues). Have a look for smbup here in the forum or use NFS.
