is it not possible to scrape network shares?
should i use a different share like smb or something else?

Try using SMB instead of UPnP.

uPnP servers return a URL that the client can use to open the stream, but this URL is dynamic i.e. it can change from session to session. That means XBMC can't add uPnP streams to it's database because it needs to store the URL in the database.
As Hitcher says, you need to use a different form of file sharing, and I'd agree that SMB is usually the easiest way to share files. I'm not sure I'd tar uPnP as diabolical. It has it's place and can be very useful, but it's not ideal for use with XBMC.
