XBMC has already the feature, upon scanning the files, if it detects a VIDEO_TS or BDMV folder, to look for the "movie.nfo" in the parent folder as well (as last chance).
This, unfortunately, does not work anylonger.

(The "if-statement" compairing the folder path seems not to work)
Although this is a little bit late, might there be a chance to get this into Eden?
