Is SOPA going to affect XBMC?

Quick legal question, again the American government are throwing their weight around,; if this goes through will it affect XBMC and the community here?

Of course. SOPA doesn't require proof. Just the accusation and the site MUST shut down.

The bank analogy:
"If a criminal had counterfeit goods in a bank safe deposit box, SOPA would allow the legitimate IP owner to shut down the entire bank and all of the branches without notice, search warrant, or due process."
Code:
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON `xbmc_%`.* TO 'xbmc'@'%';

seems to be a rocky road is ahead for xbmc (it was born in the fires of piracy after all, and it's what most users use it for....)

As long as it has legitimate uses (which it does)

But as soon as someone at the MPAA/RIAA sees a trakt.tv signature or anyone asks about how to play an AVI* file. They can put in a grievance which the host HAS to comply with. No proof, nothing.

* And unless it's changed there is no legal way to rip your DVDs either. DeCSS bypassing encryption schemes so there is no way you could legally have a DVD Rip AVI in the USA.

MPAA/RIAA and in the USA are keywords.

it will only affect americans, there nothing SOPA can do to the users of non-americans.

and if the website gets shutdown im sure it will re-open and be hosted outside of the US.

Its legal to make a copy of your dvd/albums for personal use in most of Europe and will soon be legal in the UK (although you won't get arrested or busted for making copies anyway) http://conversation.which.co.uk/technolo...argreaves/

And the whole point of the other thread "XBMC Stance on Piracy" was that it is incorporated in the US.

At this point, it's definitely sounding like SOPA is on the ropes. The very fact that they didn't push through legislation in 2011 (which was the original plan) is pretty fair indication that our genius congress has lost the political support and will to make the most horrific job-killing bill in history happen.
