[REQUEST] NZB compatible usenet newsgroup downloader and stream script or plugin?

Any chance of an NZB compatible script?
I'd love to be able to use my xbox for grabbing stuff off newsgroups.
I have a Giganews account and the Easynews script has got me wondering.
I understand the issue re pars, but if the files needed fixing I would just up the lot to my PC and run them through Quickpar.

The Easynews script is using the Easynews web interface. This means you can link directly to decoded and AutoUnrared media files via a simple URL.

Grabbing from a nntp server and decoding/decompressing would need quite a bit more work.

Does giganews have a web interface? It might be possible to use the Easynews script as a starting point if it does.

I think what you are wanting would require a little more than some python magic, ...too bad has gone M.I.A. as he was working on a native solution, see: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=25627
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Yea this script looked amazing... Sucks he just left without giving the source.

I think Easynews might be able to be used with nzb files.

I have an idea for a script although it would probably be pretty complicated. Not only would it involve an XBMC script, it would also involve a simple pc-side application. The PC application I could probably write, but the more complicated script I'd need someone else to write. Here's the idea:

Newzbin.com organizes usenet files and provides NZB's. Basically I was thinking of a script that surfs newzbin's "Movie" and "Television" results and organizes them into a list. When the user clicks on a movie, for example, the script could send a command to a specified computer on the network to start downloading the NZB for the specified movie, wait for a small amount to download, and then start playing the specified movie. (XBMC is capable of playing a movie while it's downloading if its DivX/Xvid and maybe other types too) You could even have an option to delete the video from the PC Client after you're done watching it. The end result would be a powerful video on-demand system capable of streaming almost every movie/tv show on usenet. What do you all think? Is this too big of a project to partake in? :confused2:

i don't think this would work. normally when you download anything from newsgroups they comedown as multipart rar or zip files. Everytime i have tried to unzip a multipart it requires you have every part of the zip archive present before you can unzip it. Also another stumbling block would be that when downloading from newsgroups sometimes the files are not 100% and have to be rebuilt with parity files.

just my opinion, but there might be ways around both of these issues.

Someone already tried to implement this but went MIA.

Well he was actually working on one that didn't require a computer at all, it was to run entirely on the xbox. A shame it was never finished and the source was never released. Actually I believe chunk 1970 might actually have some of the code and was working on it some but I believe he needed help if he was to finish it, if anyone is capable and would like to help contact: chunk 1970.

Hello everone,

I'm wondering if there is a complete script/program to stream movies direct from use net to your xbox ?

I know i the past there was a project about it but it was never finished.
if there is still no program for it i'm willing to start a project.

on the pc i made a program that can stream movies from usenet.
if i share the donload dir, you can watch the movie on the xbox.

i'm looking for people that know python, so we can work together.

if a frontend is made on the xbox, so you can chose your movie, then the pc start to download that move. and streams it back to the xbox.

please let me know !

Thanks,
Patrick

That's the feature that would put XBMC over the edge for me. Something integrated in to XBMC similar to NZBPlayer would be awesome. I am a geek, but have never done any coding myself, but I'm willing to help in any way needed.

Yes i was making a program like that.
look at : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G31Hkqfs6Q

if I create it on windows than some pyhon guys can make the xbmc frontend.
it would be nice if you can control everything from the xbox.
so after you pick a movie, it will be streamed in a couple of seconds (15-30)

if this project is supported by more people i'm willing to put my time in it.

Now that is a sweet looking app Smile

I would sign back up with my old usenet provider in a snap if this ever came off ! Nod

depatman,

how are you handling the condition of more than 1 video per NZB (e.g. 1 show split in 700mb chunks)? I believe we are starting to see less of this practice (who burns stuff to CDs anyway?), but it's still fairly prevalent.
