Example:

I would like to make a custom playlist called "SCI-FI"

It would include both Movies and TV Series

In the smart playlists there is a playlist type option

I can have both sources added, and set the playlist type to "Movies" and it shows just the movies.

I can have both sources added, and set the playlist type to "TV" and it shows just the TV shows.

When it is set the playlist type to "Mixed" the skin freaks out, basically it looks liek its trying to show ever option at the same time.

I've worked around it for the time being, but I would love to see this fixed.

Right, I don't know what to do with this. I will have to do some testing, but something tells me that it would not work very well. Most of the views are based on content types and they differ very much between movies and tvshows.
Since it is a feature in XBMC I'll look into it and let you know.

I also tried to do something similar but it won't work. Mine just comes up blank. I did some digging around and found that according to the wiki, "mixed" playlists are just for music videos and music, and not TV+movies (blame it on the ambiguous wording).

As far as I know, it's not possible to combine smart playlists of different content. It's not a skin issue but xbmc's problem. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=74628
