@leepenny
You've gotten some good advice - here's some more repackaged.
a) if you're going to make this 500 GB a permanent addition temp move files off of it and partition it as EXT4 + mount by uuid. This is the best way forward.
b) rest of details you need to know:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Instal...wHardDrive
use a bootCD and 'gparted' if you can to make partition in this case - gparted has an easy-to-use GUI.
after that in CLI:
sudo tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sdYX
--> shrinks reserved space
sudo ls -lG /dev/disk/by-uuid/
--> this list all devices by uuid - needed for fstab
then modify fstab for 500 GB drive
#500 GB drive
UUID=<copy,paste> /home/<user>/<mountpoint> ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
sudo chown -Rv X:X /xxx
--> where X:X is username /home/<user>/<mountpoint> is mount point - sets permissions
other info:
sudo mount -a
--> reruns fstab
mount
--> simply shows you what is currently mounted
I don't know what you know or don't know, but hope this helps either way.

q1) Is your main / OS HDD mounting correctly?
What does 'mount' in the terminal say? q2) All you need to mount extra drives is: Find their UUID via 'ls -lG /dev/disk/by-uuid/' Add that info to /etc/fstab https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Instal...wHardDrive FIXED. If I helped out pls give me a + XBMC1: i3-540, 4GB, GT430, 40GB SSD, Ubuntu 10.10 min + Dharma -> HT: 58" plasma, Denon 3808CI, Paradigm Studio 60, CC-590, ADP-470, Seismic 12 XBMC2: Atom330, 4GB, GT240, 64GB SSD, Ubuntu 12.04 min + Frodo B1 -> Main: 50" plasma, Rotel RX-1052, B&W 683 Server: 20TB FreeBSD + ZFS solution
