AMD fusion or Atom with Nvida ? (look for a cheap build) raspberry pi?)
#1
so i sold my first HTPC a few months ago and have been making due with a Western digital live plus player. it plays all my MKV HD collection fine BUT the interface is god awful.

I would love to build what i had (build in sig) but i dont have 400+ to build that again. i was looking at the $250-$300 E 350 / E 450 amd nettop's as well as the atom + nvidia ion set ups.i love how small they are but im worried about the performance of them. i would have to depend all on hardware acceleration to play back all my 1080P mkv's (some are 25+ mbps bitrate). a family member has a netbook and its so damn slow. now i understand its missing a decent graphics chip but the unit it self just takes a while to do anything. i have been trying to find a decent review on a few of these net tops but none of them talk about playback of 1080P MKV files most of them only talk about youtube HD playback or blu ray disc playback. what do you guys think? can you recommend me a cheap barebones or complete net top? also i just was reading about raspberry pi and a new video with XBMC running on it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NR57ELY28s

i would love to make a awesome altoids tin xbmc player. that would be amazing lol but being how its not out yet and its just been ported, i guess ill have to wait more on that.

These are two great choices (it is very tiny):

1. IdeaCentre Q180 - 31102AU (It should be ready for XBMC out of the box. It included "included Intel 2.13GHz, AMD HD6450A, 500GB HDD, 2GB RAM, W7 64x, etc for $303. It should be able to playback BD in full 1080P video with DTS-HD/TrueHD audio.)

2. Asus EeeBox PC EB1021 AMD Dual-Core E-450 1.65GHz/ 2GB/ 320GB/ NO ODD/ W7HP Desktop PC(Black) - EB1021-B028E . (This $318 nettop should be ready for XBMC out of the box. The AMD HD6320 in it should be able to playback BD in full 1080P video with DTS-HD/TrueHD audio.)

I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

what are your thoughts on the AMD fusion set ups? you like them more than the Intel Atom setup?

both of those looks really nice. I'm going to read up on those later tonight

I have AMD E-350 now. If I have to do it all over again, I'll select Intel 2.13GHz with AMD HD6450A because it is the more capable HTPC!

whats holding you back with your AMD E350? cpu or gpu? or both?

I'm using XBMC Eden Beta1 on Foxconn nt-3500 with win7. Files are on a WHSv1 server. I'm very satisfied. It cost me €204,- excl HDD.
A Zotac barebone comes with a remote perhaps thats even better, but I didn't like the looks of the Zotac.

fair enough.
i'd use a Foxconn nt-3500 with OpenELEC tho.

do you have any H.264 MKV 1080 videos? if so can you play the highest bit rate video you have and lmk how it runs. I'm very interested in getting this but worried about it not playing my high bit rate mkv's

the IdeaCentre Q180 looks nice though. the gpu has 2 times the shader units as the e -350 apu. but if the 350 can hold up to my video playback ill just setting for that.

i wish i had the money to just build a HTPC with a 2100T. better power consumption and way better performance compared to 350 or any atom set up. but i don't have the extra 100 + bucks to build a system Sad

What is the overall cost for Foxconn NT-3500 with HDD, RAM and Windows 7 included in it?

Slower XBMC GUI with 1.6GHz and AMD HD6310 playback in full 1080P video with DTS-HD/TrueHD is not as fluent. I installed GT430 in it, and it perform much better but it is extra cost. If I got the $303 Lenovo, I shouldn't have to add a discrete GPU because HD6450A has the same performance as a discrete HD6450.
