can i install xbmc on one comp, set it all up just how i like it and then put a fresh copy of xbmc on a different comp and then overwrite it with the set up one off my other comp to have them set and look identical ?

It's very straightforward if you install as a portable build. Set it up as you want, copy the whole folder to new machine, make new shortcut (not forgetting to make that portable as well) and go.
That's on windows, I don't know if there's more to it on a different os.

I wouldn't say you need to install it as portable. Just install it and copy the userdata folder from the first machine to the second. Keep in mind that any skin settings for backgrounds and such would need the same paths for both machines.

Sorry, I wasn't saying it was the only way - just that it's a very easy way. There's one folder to copy and you can stick it anywhere.
