Cases for fanless HTPC (ATX or microATX)
#1
I've been looking at a lot of HTPC cases noted by many on the forum. But have failed to find any ATX or microATX cases that are really well vented for fanless system. I want to use Seasonic SS-460FL fanless power supply which has vent on sides and top. So I need case to be well vented including on side and above where power supply mounts.

How about this combination from a quality brand- silverstone ST40NF and SilverStone CW01S-R.

More info- Silverstone ST40NF.

It's designed to go together...!

What are names of Antec cases? Link takes me to main Antec page. I've used Antec cases several times for tower PCs I've built and their power supplies, so do like there products.

Ohter case in mini-ITX, so too small for my needs.

Interesting power supply - uses heat sink. Case is very simlar in layout and size to my old SilverStone SST-LC03 full ATX case. I could probably just reuse my old case and may be able to mount microATX mobo in it. I was really hoping to find something more compact like the SilverStone ML03B. That case is very well vented and completely fanless, but it doesn't have vent above power supply - so I worry about overheating.

The fanless ST40NF PSU is recommended for a cheaper Grandia GD05 case too. It's $89 on Newegg...

Yea, many more options when I look at larger cases. I just learned from TeKo that the intake vent under where PSU is mounted in ML03B is 120mm, so I think I'm going to stick with that case and get quite PSU with 120mm fan.

Okay...I thought that you are interesting in a fanless PSU in another thread!

If you are interesting in PSU with fan, would as well go for this case "SILVERSTONE Sugo Series SG06-B Black". It is very well built and it included efficient 300W with 80 PLUS certification PSU and quiet 120mm fan. Smile

Yea, was interested in going fanless with well vented case, but smaller microATX case, so compromise on ML03B is to use PSU with 120mm fan. SG06B is nice but micro-ITX and taller than I want. But thanks. Now working on DDR3 selection. Kind of modeling what I'm doing off what creed3020 did minus all the fans and dvd-burner (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=114724).

I have the ML03B case and just picked up the fanless 460W Seasonic PSU for silent operation. Was planning to simply cut a hole above the PSU and place the grille that came with the case. Is this not an option for you?

BTW - here's a X-400 fanless install in the ML03B case, apparently without modifying the top of the case:

You can certainly cut a hole and mount grille. But I'll pass. To much work for me unless I really get annoyed with fan noise.

Interesting install in ML03B, but no way would I cover up the top of the fanless PSU. It is desinged with vented top for heat disapation (obviously), so no way do you want to prevent that. Also would not cover up CPU fan with sound board like he did. If you want that kind of rig, I'd just go for a bigger case!

Hey bluray. I got the ML03B but not happy with face plate and returning to Amazon. I was hoping to go low profile, but I think the GD05 you suggested looks good. Did I see some comment somewhere about the face plate being plastic or aluminum? What do you know about the case and have you seen the case? What do you think about the quality?

For sure you will have more room with the GD04 then the ML03B. The GD04 has aluminum front panel, and the GD05 has aluminum skin over plastic front panel. If you like the all aluminum front panel, you should go with GD04.

Here is the complete info on it- Silverstone GD04
