apple tv 2 will not boot just blinking white light constantly

Not sure if this is related, but my ATV2 is also rebooting in an endless loop when it is connected to the network (wired or wireless). I can stop it by blocking access to the internet. At first I thought it was XBMC (I had direct boot) but even after removing that, the ATV2 reboots to it's own menu every ~5 seconds.

I've confirmed that all upgrade blocks were installed correctly, so I'm not sure what else this could be. It just started happening in the last few days. I know this is the XMBC forum, and I'm pretty sure this is unrelated, but I'm not sure where else to look.

sigh, syslog, xbmc.log, crashreporter.log. we ask for those for a reason you know.

syslog (140MB) is large - is there a portion that you want, or all of it? Grabbing others now.

Alright, so here's the sequence I followed in the logs linked:
- removed xbmcbooter
- cleaned logs
- booted into XBMC (Ethernet disabled by blocking all ports for IP)
- unblocked Ethernet
- shut down XBMC (return to ATV menu)
- allowed a few cycles of the reboot
- blocked Ethernet
- booted into XBMC
- unblocked Ethernet

Wouldn't it be easier to copy off your userdata directory, flash it back to factory settings and re-jb it? At least then you know it is clean.

Narf003, I am having the exact same problem...started some time the last week. I turned my TV to that HDMI input and my ATV2 was at the Apple menu. It wasn't connected to the network for some reason, I browsed the apple menu and connected to my WIFI...as soon as I was connected it started endless looping... Blackscreen > HDMI Handshake > AppleTV window...

Its not a full reboot of appleTV, (there is no apple logo or date time set), just enough to make the TV resync and reset the apple menu....the apple remote is unresponsive....but yet the front light on the apple TV blinks as inputs are given to remote....but the cursor on screen fails to move.....

As soon as I blacklisted the mac address of the ATV2 on my router, it stopped rebooting...so its something to do with the connection to the internet....To get by it, I have disabled DHCP on the atv2 and manually used an IP without a gateway (so it only works on my local network)....just use a dummy IP for the gateway.... When atv2 software does a test, it will say it fails...and that the access point is no good...but it never initiates a disconnect....SO XBMC works from my ftp share Smile

Cyp -

Yup - identical, with the same work around being effective. I agree that it's not a full reboot (thankfully, otherwise I wouldn't be able to SSH). Also, I can confirm this happens both wired or wireless, and started happening about 1wk ago.

Big problem with the work around is that none of the scrappers will work. Can't get the media info for new movies I put on, and also can't use Pandora/other streaming services.

I'm going to try the suggestion of starting from scratch today (clean JB), and I'll let you know how it goes. I don't like jumping to that as I'd like to know the cause, but if it works I'll be happy.

One of my two ATV2's started doing that same thing the other day. Like y'all, it would start to boot, but never complete. Alternating between apple logo, hdmi screen, and black screen. The white light on the ATV2 DID still respond to clicks on the remote, but nothing showed on the screen. A Couple of times I saw just a FLASH of the ATV2 menu, but could never get to it. I also figured that it had to be some kind of issue in connecting with my network. I wound up rebooting my router, and doing a force restart of the ATV2. Maybe I just got lucky, but I was finally able to get the frontend menu, and it has been fine ever since.

After a clean jailbreak, things are working fine again. I'm not sure the cause of the problem, but that did fix it...

having the same problem, tried with and without xbmc boot,
the problem is the following, i use xbmc, then leave, 1 or 2 days, then whrn i use it again no xbmc image on the tv anymore,
BUT it seems XBMC is still active because i have Command Fusion Iviewer with XBMC plugin (on ipad) and i still can control XBMC, browse library, start a movie, ... everyting but no image on the tv. I do sometime have sound.

So concusion: XBMC is not crashed, but it doesn't output any image and mostly no sound.

what i have to do
Without XBMC booter, unplug ATV, replug, wait, frontrow loads, then start xbmc, and it is ok agai for some time

With XBMC booter, unplug ATV, replug, wait, some times XBMC boots sometime not, sultion unplug again until it works.

I also just started having this problem yesterday. I'm not sure if one of my room mates changed any settings, but it appears that its just coming from nowhere. I was using the wired internet, when I unplugged the restarting would stop. I thought it might be a grounding issue and tried connecting with wireless and now it won't stop at all unless my wireless router is unplugged. I'm going to try a reset and reply with the results.

edit: performed a reset from the atv2 in the general settings. plugged it back in and the same thing keeps happening. I am able to access it through ssh without interruption so I believe only the front end is restarting but I'm no expert. I'm going to try a full restore through itunes and see how it goes.

so I've isolated the issue to a networking problem

here is the syslog : http://pastebin.com/fWeU4air

this is showing up over and over again. no clue what it is.
