Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 Driver
#1
Just installed XBMC Live 10.1, first time using it. Everything is awesome except wifi.

Done a lot of reading on how to get the Intel 6230 working in Ubuntu 10.04...

Installed linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic from Compat-Wireless Project - card not detected
Installed Intel Drivers from http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads - card not detected.

I have not yet tried to build my own version of Compat-Wireless per here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable/ I'm not sure if XBMC Live has the prerequisites.

Does anyone know of a step-by-step, broken down shotgun style, how-to guide for getting the Intel 6230 working with XBMC Live 10.1? I was also hoping to use the bluetooth ability of this card for game controllers.

Thank you

Update
Noticed that Beta 3 of newest version is available by reading this: http://www.xbmcfreak.nl/en/ Will try that instead of 10.1. Hopefully driver is built into kernel!

Tried the beta and it does fix the wireless but gives me other issues. Mainly audio, same settings that I used for 10.1 don't work with 11 beta 3.

I am interested in getting the wireless working with 10.1. Anyone know how I can go about doing this?

Thank you

I have this card in one of my machines and I followed the HOWTO here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=114368

The drivers seem to be mostly ironed out in the Oneiric kernel at this point. At first there were some problems with the card not associating on boot, but I have not seen that since the most recent kernel update. If you are building a permanent installation I really think you're better off just installing Ubuntu and XBMC as in the guide above - that way it's easier to get the latest and greatest kernel and drivers whenever you want them.

Wow, that is pretty involved. Will give it a shot. One quick question, probably a dumb question...
That guide states that it is for Intel systems. I have a Jetway JNC98-525E-LF, Atom D525 and NVidia ION2. Will this work for my hardware? Imagine the only difference is I would
have to install the NVidia drivers if they aren't installed by default.

Thanks for the help!

No, if you have the ION then you'll want to follow the VDPAU guide instead. I can't find the one I followed the last time I did that, but it was so long ago that it's bound to be obsolete anyway... these steps on the wiki are probably the most up-to-date for Nvidia hardware: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...ed_machine

Maybe I can just do something like this?

http://askubuntu.com/questions/47796/can...est-kernel

10.1 Live is built on Ubuntu 10.04 right?

It sounds possible, but I haven't tried it... also, since Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) uses a 3.x kernel, my guess is that not every single fix from the 3.x branch can be backported into 2.6.x. So it's not certain that your wireless will be as stable as on the later kernel.

Also, I found that there were enough things that didn't work yet in Dharma that I had to start on the unstable PPA and run the pre-Eden builds right from the beginning (another reason why I did not go the Live route). You can update Live to the latest, of course, but if you need to change both the underlying OS and XBMC itself, there's very little reason not to just install Ubuntu and XBMC separately to begin with.

OK, don't do http://askubuntu.com/questions/47796/can...est-kernel unless you want to recover the old kernel... Luckily I didn't uninstall it. Think I will just do what you suggested and build XBMC on top of Ubuntu 11.10.

Where in that thread does it discuss getting this card to work? I painstakingly followed the instructions in the first post and my Centrino 6230, which worked hit and miss with XBMCbuntu, now doesn't work at all.
