can some one who has used both tell me which they prefer and why? eg speed, functionality etc.

Just got mythtv and mythbox working and I find out there is cmyth.

I steered away from xbmc in the past (just used mythtv FE/BE) until the cmyth addon surfaced. Mythbox appeared a bit "bolted on" for my liking. As far as I can tell, the cmyth addon is integrated and inline with the xbmc roadmap.

I've been using the cmyth addon, based on xbmcbuntu, for about 2 weeks and it is behaving itself quite well.

I've got a couple of issues (as you would expect at this time in the development cycle), but none are deal breakers at this stage.
