In XBMC go to System>SystemInfo and it will show you basic system settings including the version and build date.
System: XBMC HTPC with HDMI WASAPI & AudioEngine - Denon  AVR-3808CI  - Denon DVD-5900 Universal Player  - Denon DCM-27 CD-Changer
- Sony BDP-S580 Blu-Ray  - X-Box 360  - Android tablet wireless remote - 7.1 Streem/Axiom/Velodyne Surround System
If I have been able to help feel free to add to my reputation +/- below - thanks!

according to the wiki... it says this... I don't see this option...

What nightly build/beta/version of XBMC am I running?

XBMC main menu > System > Lower submenu > System info. Note the build date.

That should do it - are you using the default skin?

yeah, there is no settings submenu. I can click system>system and that sends me to system settings but... can't find a build version anywhere.

I'm beginning to think this isn't eden though. I installed this last week on kubuntu and it looked different. the main menu scrolled left to right and videos menu looked like a movie theater. This main menu scrolls up and down and shows a tv on the wall.

I haven't made any changes yet. this is a fresh install.

That's a pretty old version. Please go to http://www.xbmc.org and go to the downloads page. Note that a new release is coming out in the next couple of days.

The current stable release is Dharma 10.1

The latest is Eden 11 RC1 moving to RC2 in the next few days.

There is about a year's difference and lot's of great additions going with Eden 11.

Correct. Eden has a horizontal menu.

Yeah, I thought this one was kind of lame compared to the other one I was using last week. I just needed a less bloated OS for my old computer. I just uninstalled it and updated the repository. Is there any easy way to update it with rc2 when it comes out?

bah. So I followed the instructions here. (Yeah yeah, I should have read the wiki first...) http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Ins...nux#Ubuntu and I'm getting this error when I try to update my repositories:
Code:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/source/Sources  404  Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/binary-i386/Packages  404  Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Follow the same method and you can install right over top Smile

interesting. there is no ubuntu oneiric directory under distributions at http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/dists/.... So, how do I install the latest version? MEH.

Sounds like they're starting to build the RC2 builds now then. Safest thing is to hold off until tomorrow and you'll get the latest release with a few bug fixes etc.

EDIT: ah, sorry yes Ubuntu. Not ideal.

which flavor would you suggest then? I like ubuntu because it's the lazy man's linux. I'm intimately familiar with RHEL, CentOS, Debian, and Gentoo as well. If there's a better os, I'm totally open to installing it. As long as it's lightweight and not bloated. I could even do a server kernel or command line install and throw xfce on top of it....
