Although I appreciate the "disscussion", no one came up with a solution. Kodi has secure shell as a network source option, therefore I'd think it would connect.
However I can't get it to work either.
WinSCP and Filezilla have no problem connecting via sftp.

A little up on this topic because still trying to figure it out guys. I am able to add SSH/SFTP as a source on my Kodi installation on my Mac or my Android box but still not able to on my Windows, tried fresh install of windows and Kodi on Windows 7/8.1 & 10 but not working.

Is there anybody who at least knows if it is a known problem with Kodi or if I am doing something wrong?

Yeah SFTP from remote sites is broken. It was never implemented correctly. You can see the bug here http://trac.kodi.tv/ticket/14038 . It's been there for 3 years, so don't expect it to be fixed.

From the bug, they suggest using protocols that are supported by libcurl, which would be http(s) webdav(s).
