True full screen only during playback?

With true full screen enabled my cpu runs at 100%, fanart and posters are slow to display, and updating the library takes hours. Video looks great tho.

With full screen window enabled the cpu use is lower, the library updates in minutes and the fanart and posters are quick, but video is choppy and I get alot of tearing.

Is there any possible way to have XBMC automatically switch to true full screen during playback then switch back to a full screen window while navigating the menu?

That does not sound like typical behavior. Are your drivers up to date?

It sounds as if vsync isn't enabled, or you have an old video card that doesn't handle vsync properly. Look in System settings, System, Video output and set "Vertical blank sync" to always enabled.
