Can you install XMBC on Linux non GUI version? I hope to improve performance and stability installing it on an non GUI version ie Ubuntu Server. but so far following the directions I have not been successful.

When users are installing this on Ubuntu (standard w gui) are they using the Server command line.

If installing on Ubuntu standard with gui will the system recognize the upnp shares on winxp?

A new guide exactly matchning xbmcbuntu would be nice! To get started is easy
sudo apt-get install lightdm xbmc xbmc-standalone

Most of the rest should be esay to find on github. I like projects like this but personally I am happy with using the xbmcbuntu iso for installation.

All this is assuming you do not want minimal as in no lightdm. Personally I do not mind it and I see no performance need to remove it on a 2G box.

BTW, the new xbmcbuntu SDK is much easier to undertsand then the old live and an alternative to creating a minimal is to customize the xbmcbuntu installation.

I have a minimal ubnutu 11.10 install with xbmc on top. This post shows how I got xbmc to launch automatically on boot:

I noticed that the main guide that I used has had its link changed, this is the guide I used for the bulk of my install
