Which Graphics Card is better
#1
I have to get a PCI graphics card, I'm hoping to get the most supported now and into the future so I dont have any hiccups
I am running Windows 64bit

which one is better?

GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit DDR3

or
GeForce GT 520 (Fermi) 512MB 64-bit DDR3

or is there another option i dont know about?

thanks for all your help!

For Win7 with bitstreaming support I would add the ATI 6450 into the mix, but personal preference is of course up to you Smile

I've found through use that it does a very decent job matching the dreaded 23.976hz refresh rate, which seems problematic for many vid cards, and it handles bitstreaming and 1080p smoothly.
System: XBMC HTPC with HDMI WASAPI & AudioEngine - Denon  AVR-3808CI  - Denon DVD-5900 Universal Player  - Denon DCM-27 CD-Changer
- Sony BDP-S580 Blu-Ray  - X-Box 360  - Android tablet wireless remote - 7.1 Streem/Axiom/Velodyne Surround System
If I have been able to help feel free to add to my reputation +/- below - thanks!

Check the relative performance here. I suggest the GeForce GT430 or 440 would be a better choice. Here's a silent GT 430.

You can also compare these GPUs with the 8400 at http://www.geforce.com/Hardware. Seems to me that the 8400 is way out of contention.

I think that frr is looking for a PCI card. Of the two mentioned, I believe the GT520 is better.

This is really a thread for the Hardware section of the forum but yes, I'd goes with the 520 over the 8400 mainly for the fact it is much newer and has better support (drivers, newer OpenGL & directX, etc)
I'm not an expert but I play one at work.

Thanks everyone for all your help, yeah I quickly made this thread while at the airport so can some moderator move this where it needs to be, sorry about the n00b move there.

I am looking for a PCI graphics card. The ATI looks like a great card but a hefty price tag.

The machine I'm putting this in is actually my NAS. Further explanation on my setup.

On my NAS Im running a SMB share from the BOOT SSD Vertex2 for thumbnails and the mySQL server.
The onboard GPU doesnt work with xbmc and I would like to install it for the purpose of auto updating my library at a set interval while also updating sharethe.tv and extrafanart downloader. I will never use this machine to actually watch the media however.

So I think the in the less than 60$ range the better option is the GT520.

>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!
