Bug report -- v11 Eden RC2, not creating thumbnails from mp4
#1
Now that the 'scene' has changed it's format for SDTV most of it is mp4 files and XBMC doesn't seem to be able to extract the thumbnail from them.

I am using Windows 7 x64, and I have some youtube videos downloaded as mp4 files. XBMC is suppose to scan the files and extract thumbnails using a frame from the videos. When using v11 Eden Beta 2, this worked correctly.

Before upgrading to RC2, I deleted "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata\Thumbnails" to refresh thumbnails for some other videos. However, I noticed RC2 only re-created thumbnails for a couple of the mp4 files. So I deleted the Thumbnails folder again, then downgraded to Beta2, and the thumbnails were re-created perfectly. I tried this multiple times, and RC2 always only created a handful of thumbnails, and Beta2 worked for all files. Beta3 also worked fine.

Then I tried upgrading ATV2 from Beta2 to RC2 by deleting the Thumbnail first, XBMC also did not extract mp4 thumbnails after the upgrade. I am not sure how to downgrade on ATV2, so I am stuck there.

So I am pretty sure the problem is with RC2 release since the problem appears on Windows and ATV2. The "Extract thumbnails and video information" option is on. Also some thumbnails were extracted, just not majority of the videos.

I've had this problem with every version of XBMC that I can remember. I have an entire file directory with M4A music video files (over 300) and I'd say 1/3-1/2 of them show blank thumbnail files for reasons unknown. The rest show as normal. They're all encoded with the same Handbrake settings so it makes no sense. It's fairly irritating too since in the regular AppleTV interface, it reads the IDTags and the song information comes up as normal. Without a thumbnail, I can't tell which video is which since I used a numerical auto-naming order in Handbrake (I suppose the answer is to rename all the files, but it still would be nice to have a thumbnail).

EDIT: Just seen this thread even though it didn't show up in a search.

Not sure how the above reply is relevant. The problem I reported is that V11 Beta 2 and Beta 3 worked fine and V11 RC2 is broken. Your reply is about some problem XBMC always had...
Hmm, wonder how Hitcher's reply jumped to post #1 and my original post that initiated this thread became post #2... seems like this thread is out of sequential order...
*** found some clues ***

upon further testing, when scanning the media directory full of mp4 files, the "Duration (xx:xx:xx)" display in the lower right hand corner goes all the way to 8hr+ and xbmc finishes scanning everything and creates all the thumbnails with v11 beta3. But the counter only goes up to 30min+ and stops using v11 rc2, so only a few thumbnails are created. Something clearly broke between beta3 and rc2.
I found out how to submit a proper bug report. For anyone interested, it is below
