[SOLVED] Problem with .sub subtitles
#1
As I try to download .sub subtitles with XBMC subtitle addon the subtitles downloads normally but they won't show up. If I downloaded .srt subtitles they are working just fine. Is there some sort of an issue with XBMC subtitle addon?

Most of the Finnish subtitles are in .sub format and that causes me much trouble.

I am having the same problem. Suddenly the subtitles with the sub-extension stopped to work.

I have some earlier downloaded sub-extension subtitles and they worked ok. When viewing the video file I re-downloaded the very same subtitle file and then played the video file and tried to load the same subtitle again and then the subtitles didn't work even though the subtitle file was exactly in the right place again.

It is just like my set up has stopped to be able to receive and show ne sub-extension subtitles.

I tested now once again. I had certain tv show episode with a subtitle file with the extension "sub". I watched the episode like one month ago. At that time the subtitles worked ok and they worked ok now also. But, then, when viewing the episode, I re-downloaded that subtitle file with the XBMC subtitle plugin. And after that the subtitles don't show up even though it is the very same subtitle file! It is the only subtitle file for my language for that tv show episode.

This seems to be a bit odd. Will post debug logs later on (I am sleeping my kid right now).

Those subtitles have been downloaded from Opensubtitles-server

I am using Win7 64-bit with XBMC Eden RC2

Well, last sunday i faced the same problem... i tried to watch "kung fu panda" at xbmc eden rc 2... and it didn't connected to the xbmc subtitle add-on... then i watched it in vlc, subtitles downloaded...

well... today i downloaded the stable xbmc eden, installed and tried the kung fu panda 2 again... and worked well... connected to podnapisi.net... then i tried 127 hours... same connection problem...

so i logged i trying to watch 127 hours and trying to download the subtitles without success, then kung fu panda 2 with success and finally for few dollars more without success...

http://pastebin.com/17PwfbUx

[edit] forgot to say that 127 hours don't have any previous subtitle file, but kung fu panda 2 and for a few more dollars have previous subtitle files

disable "auto download" in addon settings, its a known bug that has been fixed

I am returning to my .sub-subtitle problem . I manually downloaded some .sub-files from other subtitle website . It seems to be working ok. There seems to be CRLF in the end of each line meanwhile the .sub-files from opensubtitle.org has only the carriage return.

I changed the EOL signs with notepad++ as "Windows" and now the .sub file from opensubtitle.org has also the CRLF and now the subtitles are shown ok.

Could it be really so that the .sub files at opensubtitle.org has been edited so that the EOL characters were earlier CRLF and now only CR.

Or is it so that the XBMC subtitle plugin has started for some reason to be unable to handle the .sub files with only the CR as a EOL character.

we dont touch sub(srt, txt) files that come from OpenSubtitles. the only thing we do is rename them to match the file name and add language flag if needed.

have you tried downloading that specific .sub from OpenSubtitles website and testing? does it have the CRLF? or is it only CR? if the ones from website are the same as addon then you know the problem is in the way they handle files.

I have noticed lately that there is a line that says "Subtitle downloaded from oensubtitles.org" which leads me to believe that they are editing the file, maybe they are saving it incorrectly?

amet:

I am writing this message in a hurry, try to write more later on.

Unfortunately I have deleted the latest .sub files (have watched those movies/episodes) , the ones that were initially working ok (this was before this problem emerged).

I still have some working .sub files around but I am not 100% sure whether they were downloaded from opensubtitles.org. I am almost sure that they are from opensubtitles.org but not 100% sure. At that point it didn't yet matter at all that from which place did the download as long as they just worked and didn't have this issue.

I now re-downloaded some of those .sub files from opensubtitles.org and because of the replacements of CRLF with CR the subs are not shown in XBMC (this is old news). When comparing those the old version of the .sub file and the new version of the .sub file it would seem to me that they are identical exept the CRLF to CR changes AND the thing that there would now seem to be added
"Subtitles downloaded from www.OpenSubtitles.org" message/subtitle . It is located on the beginning part (logically). So, could it be so that they have run a script which has added that thing to all of the subtitle files and that script would have changed the CRLFConfused to CR ?

Whatever the problem is I now understood from your saying that there is no changes neither in XBMC or XBMC subtitle addon that has caused this thing. So I understand that this therefore is not a fault of XBMC or XBMC subtitle addon.

Hopefully somebody have a connection to opensubtitles.org. I could try to contact them by myself but I'm afraid my English is not good enough for explaining this problem clearly enough.

Meanwhile I am wondering that would it be possible easily enough to make a kind of check into XBMC subtitle addon. A checking thing which would make this thing go away. As I don't have a clue about the things that are under the hood of the XBMC thing it could be so that this question is naive and annoying. If it is so then I apologize for asking and wondering that thing.

This problem is not so nasty anymore as it can be manually fixed by editing the .sub file. But of course it would be more fun if the .sub files would work like they worked earlier.

Edit:

Hello again,

Oh, I am so stupid. You mentioned the same observation of the "Subtitle downloaded from oensubtitles.org" adding. Would edit my earlier post but don't have the time just right now. Sorry.

I think we have established what the issue is, it's opensubtitles editing the file... All I need now is for you to tell me what file ( ID or zip name) doesnt work and I can let Brano( opensubtitles admin) know and hopefully fix soon.

For example 127.Hours.2010.DVDSCR.AC3.XViD-T0XiC-iNK.sub does not work.

according to OpenSubtitles administrator, the issue should be fixed now.

not sure how would it affect the files that are already affected. try and let us know.
