Is it possible to have a non-selectable label within a directory listing in an addon? This would be useful as a heading or separator.
Breadcrumbs don't work too well within addons, and can't be set manually, so having a non-selectable heading would work instead.

The directory listing would only want to be viewable during the default view. So if the view was changes to eg date that those info directory listing wouldn't be available because they would be in the right place any more. A colour change these special directory listing might be appropriate too.

I know this really isn't the solution your looking for, but you could make a dummy list item. When you add the item make sure not to use 'isFolder=True". Then have it execute some do nothing function, print statement, or something.
