I'm thinking about using some old hardware and making a HTPC. one of the things I would like is to have a screensaver that's pictures from a directory. I think this would help sell this idea to my wife, when the TV isn't in use we could have family pics (especially of our 6 month old son) could be playing in the background. is that possible with XBMC?

Yes - you can do a slideshow - go to System>Settings>Appearance>Screensaver and change it to Slideshow, then give it a path to your pictures
