Subtitle character joining/shaping for Semitic languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi...)

@still_alive/balbaid, again xbmc already uses fribidi however fribidi doesn't do the job yet (not arabic 'mature' enough), and again it's this fribidi's devs you need to lobby and help out, not us :hmm:

there is some available code to enable arabic shaping support.

but we need someone to add it to xbmc.

try it from here

let me get it straight.

we need to have 2 functions in the settings of xbmc

1. enable right to left (which is fribidi implementation)

2. enable shaping for arabic language ( use the function available from arabeyes.org )

@still_alive, xbmc already support (1) right to left bidirectional-flipping (that is what our existing fribidi implementation does). xbmc doesn't support (2) shaping for arabic language, again you should convince fribidi (link) to implement that first.

ps! not directly related to this but maybe interesting for those any of those who wish to convert arabic (and hebrew too?) dvd-video's vobsubs to txt-based subtitle-files; subrip 1.30 beta 2 now has experimental unicode support.

fribidi 0.10.5 has been ported to mplayer 1.0-pre7, but don't expect to see those changes in xbmc anytime soon: you/we need an arabic or hebrew speaking developer to port them to xbmc :hmm: ...and i think before that can happen mplayer 1.0-pre7 changes will need to be ported over to xbmc too and that is a huge task which is not planned to be done by anyone yet, (we'll most likely wait until the would be stable mplayer 1.0.0 final is out first and there is no e.t.a. on that).

I thought that we are used libfreetype2

I think Pango may be a likely LGPL open source C/C++ library which could be used?

Quote:Pango is a library for laying out and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. Pango can be used anywhere that text layout is needed, though most of the work on Pango so far has been done in the context of the GTK+ widget toolkit. Pango forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.x.
Pango also uses FreeType and features joining and shaping for Semic languages.
