Unfortunately then I get the reverse, a message that says:

"The file /dev/disk1 does not exist."

sudo df -lh

and you will see the device (/dev/disk1s1 or /dev/disk2s1 or /dev/disk3s1 .....)

then

sudo diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s1 => your disk

Thanks Sparky, this helped building the SD card but i'm having problems booting the Pi. However upon doing some research I found that the Pi is having some issues with certain 10x SD cards (some sort of voltage issue) - this may explain why the Pi isn't booting. I'm going to try to re-build the SD card on a regular 4Gb SD and see if I have more luck.
