Building a fanless, low power consuming server
#1
Hiya guys

Im about to build myself a lowpowered server that I need to be as quiet as possible, as it will be on 24/7 power consumption is a big thing for me

Now what will I be running?

- Windows Home Server (Got my reasons..)
- Sabnzbd
- Sickbeard
- Couchpotato
- Headphones
- Tonido (or any alike backup software)
- Apache
and maybe an mysql server

I will require atleast 6 SATA2 connections, perferebly with good extension possibilites (so motherboard + chassi needs to fit this)

As im soon starting at an university this server will mainly serve as my backup unt while also serving me with music and movies, along with hosting a few web projects of mine

Oh and, it should come as cheap as possible Tongue (I prefer EU resellers, since I live in Norway!)

HP Microserver - these are really quite and perfect little servers. They are normally about £240 in the UK and usually have a £100 cash back deal too, which makes them great value.

I read a review about these ones, but they seem to only support 4 drives while I currently got 6 drives (2TB each) and growing. I need something else Wink

You can fit a lot more than 4 drives in it.

If you just want to use 3.5" drives, you can fit 4x in hot swap bays, 1 in dvd bay and 1x esata = 6 drives +usb drives should you want them.

If you use some 2.5" drives you can fit a lot more.....

Think I've seen servers with 13 drives in total Smile

If you are looking for more than that, then you are looking at a self build option.

Fair enough :p

So if id were to get one of thoes, id probably need a controller card right? Or how many sata contacts are there on the motherboard? I've tried searching, but nobody seems to mention this.. If i'd need a controller, any recomendations?

Was playing around with a custom build, got this which will support 11 drives (if I use an 3 to 4 converter in the 5.25 bays) which would possibly give 22TB of storage (2TB drives)

But im uncertain of the motherboard and processor, will they drain alot of power? 65w processor..

Oh and the list, http://www.prisjakt.no/list.php?l=22838&view=m

The page is in Norwegian, but you can read out the names im sure Smile
