unable to create application - glewInit returned 1

I'm trying to install XBMC for the first time, and it's failing to start with the error

22:36:26 T:139992776288160 ERROR: InitRenderSystem() glewInit returned 1: Missing GL version

I'm running Debian squeeze with the XBMC 11 debs from http://debian.oppserver.net/xbmc/ . I'm using Intel graphics, with the latest kernel and X drivers from squeeze-backports.

I've pasted the full log at http://pastebin.com/dHmLyku4 . Can anyone help with what I'm doing wrong? thanks.

I also tried the XBMC 10 debs from debian-multimedia.org and got the same error.

What Intel IGP chipset? Have you specifically installed the Intel X drivers or just X in general? Do you have X up and running outside of XBMC? Is your chipset supported? Is is capable of supporting the version of OpenGL needed for XBMC?

It's the Sandybridge chipset. X is running perfectly with the Xorg Intel drivers (version 2.15.0). glxheads run.

GL_VERSION: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.3
GL_VENDOR: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI Intel® Sandybridge Desktop

I just found that upgrading libgl1-mesa-glx to the version from the Debian backports repository (7.10.3) made it work.
