MIDI/KAR files crash XBMC
#1
Hi all,

I have two set-ups:
- a clean install of XBMCbuntu Eden on a NVidia-based HTPC, and
- a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 from their minimal CD with XBMC Eden from PPA (no window manager, no GNOME etc., just xbmc-standalone over Xorg) on ATI-based system.

Karaoke support is enabled in both. In both cases XBMC crashes (actually reloads leaving a crash log) when playback of a MIDI or KAR file is attempted.

Both systems have the standard Ubuntu soundfont, Fluidity, installed from PPA and linked in $USERDATA/timidity/soundfont.sf2. XBMC clearly sees it, because without it it gives an error like "unable to play file...".

On the same two systems Eden is also installed over Lucid (in both cases, from minimal CD + XBMC Live from PPA, no window manager, same soundfont installed the same way) and plays the MIDI/KAR files fine.

I have opened a Trac entry, but I'm also posting here in case anybody has seen similar behaviour.

Debug logs from the NVidia system (XBMCbuntu):
- original one, ending with PulseAudio error:

- after installing PusleAudio from PPA (it was not installed by XBMCbuntu - still, all other media played fine; I know XBMC uses PulseAudio, but when stand-alone it likely manages to work directly with ALSA) - having PulseAudio got me rid of the error message in debug log, but did not get e rid of the crash.

The second log leaves the impression that the player is happy with the MIDI file and the crash might occur somewhere else, like, in the visualisation; however, visualisation works fine with other types of media (e.g., a WAV file).

Any ideas (aside from skipping 11.10 and waiting for 12.04 LTS) will be appreciated.

WWell,
