Researchers develop a Kodi tool to tell users whether an addon is safe or not safekodi
I'd be interested in the Kodi teams official response to this

I may be wrong, but there has been a PR to add it to the official repo and many Kodi Team members have replied about it.
It had been rejected and there are many privacy issues about it.
A "third-party" group is getting the list of addons you have installed, who really knows how they are going to use this info?
Any addon found outside Kodi repository is inherently unsafe because the code has not been analyzed by Kodi Team members.
A "third-party" addon declared as "safe" by a "third-party" group is a very bad idea.

@stammie I went to the 'safekodi' page, jumped at the 'publicly available for free' link and was presented with a 404 error. nuff said. Kodi module auditor scans and compares modules with the official repository, is a start in the right direction.

Thought this article about Plex (mentioned along with rival service Kodi)  and the Slash forum take on it, was worth the read for those with time on their hands.

like with any addon not part of our official addon repository, this applies:
https://kodi.tv/article/freedom-of-choice

some additional thoughts on this addon specifically can be read here:
https://github.com/xbmc/repo-scripts/pull/1270

my personal, non official, response would be:
unless you want your MAC address, linked to a list of your (potential illegal) addons to end up on some remote server, don't install it.
(see: https://github.com/yunmingxiao/script.sa...py#L33-L34)

i'm sure the addon was developed in good faith, but data collection like that isn't acceptable in my book. (and it's very likely a violation of the GDPR as well)
Do not PM or e-mail Team-Kodi members directly asking for support.
Always read the Forum rules, Kodi online-manual, FAQ, Help and Search the forum before posting.

Hi I'm one of the developers of SafeKodi.

Thanks for the comment. It is a reasonable concern for the GDPR regulation. So I'd like to clarify that we're not violating it.

The research occupies a privileged position within the GDPR regulation (Article 6(4); Recital 50. Artical 6(1)(f); Recitals 47, 157. Artical 49(h); Recital 113). The data collection here only serves to provide more comprehensive addon tagging service and academic purposes. And we're following Northwestern University's requirement of conduct of research to implement appropriate safeguards to the data and anonymization. Therefore, SafeKodi does not violate the GDPR regulation.

Hi stammie, Could you specify which link was 404 error? We'll fix it right away. Thanks

I thought I could use github for corona virus rescue, so I created an account called Corona Aid.
I don't know what I can do, but I hope everyone around the world can share the project and make music and videos.

When evaluating whether to utilize third-party addons with Kodi, one may consider the potential risks, including privacy concerns and the lack of scrutiny from the Kodi Team. It serves as a reminder about the importance of selecting carefully-chosen addons to ensure both privacy and security.

Popped up on my phone while perusing news sites.
