Best way to achieve high-quality 480p?
#1
Hey guys, I just upgraded my HTPC from my old XBOX to PC. And I would like to know the best way to encode 480p xvid files. The reason being is not important and would appreciate any tips and suggestions. I currently have these settings on MeGUI. The source most of the time is h264 bdrip. What I'm basically asking for is for somebody's help in order to achieve the best looking 480p xvid movie quality possible.

Don't use Xvid. Use Handbrake. Stay in H.264. Superior to Xvid. http://handbrake.fr/

Handbrake is free.

K I'll check it out. Thanks. Well the reason I was interested in Xvid is because it consumes less CPU power and it plays smooth on my xbox. And I'm going to share media from my main HTPC and the Xbox in the bedroom. And I just found out about 480p and it plays great so I wanted to encode my own DVDs.

H.264 is superior as I said and for 480P it should not impact performance. You could transcode a file using Handbrake and Xvid and compare.

Encoding video is a lot of black art voodoo. There are many options in the codecs, each of which is useful in different situations (fast motion, animation, etc can have different requirements). There is no general best setting.

There are some general settings that can be left on. Trellis Quantization is generally one that should stay on. Two pass is better, as it gives the codec a chance to analyze the video and prepare better. Most other things is best to leave alone.

If you Google encoding to xvid best settings or something, you'll get plenty of answers. Some even explain what all the options mean. Here are a few I found:

You will be better off in the long run staying with H.264 if you can. It packs better and looks better for a given size, at the expense of a little extra electricity.

Good Luck.

I would recommend MediaCoder.
It has a nice wizzard. And if you are lucky you can use your videocard.

Stick to x.264 and MP4 container. Besides quality this will also ensure playback on future devices and other OSes.
I prefer variable bitrates for reducing file size and two pass. AC3 or ACC

I suggest getting a program like Gspot to check all the settings of the original file and not to deviate too much.
By that i mean if the source is Interlaced stick with it. Otherwise Hybrid forms like telecined are best.
Same goes for framerate, leave it (unless it is 59.94fps, then google it).
threads on auto
Noise in post-processing not in deblock

Most stuff, leave it default unless you want something different because you have good sources.

But if you really want to get into this i suggest a more specialized forum.
