[LIVE] Install leaves me with "login" screen
#1
I attempted to use a love USB install. I get all the way through the install and after rebooting am left with this:

"Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS xbmc tty1

XBMC login:"

Linux Distribution and Version 10.04.2 (did not install directly did clean install of xbmc Live)
Hardware: Acer Revo 1610.
Install Method: manual from Live USB built with unetbootin

I tried to follow some guidance found on the HOW TO threads, specifically [LIVE] HOW-TO install XBMC Live on Acer Aspire Revo - The Complete Guide for Newbies. I tried:

sudo apt-get -y install xbmc
computer returned "xbmc is already newest version"

Any help would be great!

You can login very easy with ur "name" and "password"!

Then on the command promt u have all the things u need Big Grin

You can try starting xbmc by ur self with typing xbmc
Or try to start the x-server with startx

But before u try this, u should have a look, if xbmc isnt allready running.
Swith to another "workingspace" by pressing [strg]+[alt]+[F1] -> [F9]

XBMC should be on F7 or F8

Some informations about ur specs would be great .....

Thanks for the reply gmozilla.

I logged in as xbmc using xbmc as login and password.

I then tried to run xbmc as you suggested and received the following error:
Error: unable to open display
FEH.py: cannot connect to X server

I then tried startx which brought up a sparse looking "desktop". I tried alt F1 though 9. I got a window for F1 and F2, not XBMC.

*UPDATE*
I clicked around with the mouse and found a menu that had xbmc listed so I clicked it and that brought xbmc up. So now I am wondering how to get the machine to boot into xbmc without all these steps?

My specs as I know them:
i386
Processor
Intel Atom 230 (1.6GHz)
Cache Per Processor
512KB L2 Cache
Memory
1GB DDR2
Hard Drive
160GB 5400RPM SATA
Graphics
Integrated NVIDIA ION LE Graphics

EDIT:
Below was my first answer, now i see that it will start but not when you boot pc.
in these case i think:
aptitude purge xbmc-live
aptitude clean
aptitude xbmc xbmc-live

If you get rid off xbmc from your linux:

aptitude purge xbmc xbmc-live
aptitude clean
aptitude install xbmc xbmc-live

if you want pvr support:

aptitude purge xbmc xbmc-live
aptitude clean
add-apt-repository ppa:lars-opdenkamp/xbmc-pvr
apt-get update
apt-get -y install xbmc

After that and if al woring
Delete repository ppa:lars-opdenkamp/xbmc-pvr proberly in the /etc/apt/source.list.d directory.

I cut and pasted line by line your instructions will ssh into my Acer Revo. I executed each command as "sudo". After each "sudo aptitude clean" command I rebooted.

After the "sudo apt-get -y install xbmc command this is what I got:
-------------------------------------------
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc: Depends: xbmc-data (= 2:10.5-dharma+pvr~odk48) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xbmc-skin-confluence (= 2:10.5-dharma+pvr~odk48) but it is not going to be installed

Typically means that live that not have the drivers for your card

Quote:sudo apt-get -y install xbmc
Forget about that, you dont need that. Especially not before you have a picture

Hi, just want to share my experience...

I also had this problem before... search online and tried everything for days but failed... then I reinstall XBMCLive back, start from scracth from format USB back and delete partition. Then everything solved.

Before I'm afraid if I reinstall I will mess again with audio, because that also a few days issue for me. But it happened otherwise. Then 1 of my friend just install XBMCLive Dharma also in his Acer Revo, had a problem with sound at first and with further step he reinstall it again, then it solved.

just want to share...
