unraid server help
#1
Hello,

I am definitely a noob when it comes to computer parts and even more so when it comes to NAS. I am looking to build an unraid server. I don't have much media right now (<2TB) and don't really think I'll ever have tons and tons of it, either. My main goal for this is that I want to be able to stream my tv shows and movies to other tvs in the house at any time (and maybe to other places via VPN). Since I don't see a need to have several harddrives, I want this build to be as cheap as possible (I'm hoping less than maybe $250) but also expandable to a reasonable amount (idk.. 4 or 6 drives or something?)

I know very little about computer parts (though I did build my HTPC). I don't consider myself well qualified to pick the parts I need so I'm really looking for advice on the cheapest parts that will do what I want. I found the recommended budget builds over at UnRAID Me (http://unraid.me/buy/). I thought I would just do the cheapest one listed but newegg no longer carries the mobo (and the case is out of stock).

So, here are the parts that are in the budget build so far. (here is a link from the unraid me site that lists all of these http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Public...82502&SID=)

PSU - www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026z
processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819103888
ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820148239

This build also recommends a drive cage but I think I do not need this so I left it out of my list.

What mobo (and if you have a case to recommend, too, that would be cool) should I choose to go with these parts that will work with unraid and for what I am wanting to use it for? I read something about transcoding, too. I don't really understand what that means, but I think if I am just using the NAS to access the files (I will be watching the videos either from my HTPC or my apple tv2 with xbmc on both) I will not be transcoding. Is this correct?

What else would I need? Also, is there a different build that would be more suited for what I am looking for?

Thanks a lot for your help!

How is this build? I'm trying to get this as cheap as possible as this setup is mostly form convenience for me and I don't have a lot of data to store.

mobo - ASRock A785GM-LE Micro
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813157274

cpu - AMD Sempron LE-1250 single core
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819113001

ram - 2x1gb ddr2 g.skill
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231108

psu - LOGISYS 480W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817170014

case - rosewill r101-p-bk
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811147112

I think all of these parts are compatible with each other, but I'm not sure this will suit my needs (or if this mobo is compatible with unraid)
