Ideal HTPC Setup for newb
#1
Hey,

Ive been running XBMC off of my laptop I would like to build or purchase something to be a dedicated setup.

Can someone possibly list off components that would be mandatory for there build ie how much memory video cards etc...

Can a nettop be powerful enough? So far I mainly just stream things but I would like to try the video game emulators sometime.

Thanks for the help.

www.ncix.com is a local store I get stuff at off and on.

This question is better suited for the "Hardware for XBMC" forum.... you will find more information there.
Hardware for XBMC

BTW I'm in the same boat as you, a noob looking for a system....I just don't know if i should build or buy a pre built system.

Just beware the first post is 8-9 months out of date. You should start at the end and work back.

i'd say for a noob the pivox xios with linux installed is the best performing and most stable xbmc box for your buck at the moment.

linux might sound scary to noobs, but its about as simple as copying files onto a memory card and putting it in the machine.

Building is more fun, just be patient and check with people that you are combining the right components for the job!

I would like to build something I've never done it before and I love tech stuff would like to definitely learn more and no better way than to get your hands dirty.

Mostly I will be streaming 1 channel ice films etc, playing some stuff from external hard drives definitely accessing music and playing it. I use my iPhone as my remote right now and would like to keep that option. ( I had xbmc yrs ago I just never used it to its full potential and still not so I I don't 100% know exactly how many different things I will use it for.)

I plan on using a raspbmc for another tv and the htpc on the main tv.

I don't know squat about the emulator stuff I was just reading about it on lifehacker and I would love to give it a whirl.
